Leading educationists from Mumbai and Pune have welcomed the decision of Maharashtra government's Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) to conduct Maharashtra CET again.
It is a positive development as a result of which the number of students taking up the test will certainly rise, said Dr Ashok Joshi

Leading educationists from Mumbai and Pune have welcomed the decision of Maharashtra government’s Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) to conduct Maharashtra CET again.

Directorate of Technical Education, Mumbai, on November 21, 2013 announced the exam dates for MAH CET 2014 for Admission to First Year MBA/MMS for 2014-2015 in Maharashtra which will be conducted on Saturday, March 15, 2014 and Sunday, March 16, 2014, respectively.

MAH CET 2014 exam dates announced by DTE Maharashtra
Last year, admissions to the MBA institutes in the Maharashtra were carried out on the basis of Common Management Aptitude Test (CMAT) conducted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). But rural students were unable to take the online test, CMAT which was taken at the national level. Approx 39% students could not take their exams. The state also had witnessed 66% drop in number of applicants across various B schools in Maharashtra last year.

While talking to MBAUniverse.com regarding the development Dr Ashok Joshi, Director, Indian Institute of Cost and Management Studies and Research (IndSearch) said, ‘’ It is a positive development as a result of which the number of students taking up the test will certainly rise’’.

In order to pave way for centre’s ‘one India one test’ concept the Common Entrance Test was discontinued last year only and replaced by CMAT, an online test conducted twice in a year as compared to the offline CET. As per the government’s announcement the scores of CMAT would be accepted to the MBA institutions

MAH CET likely to restart, B schools blame CMAT for Vacant seats
According to a notification released by Director of technical education Dr. Subhash Mahajan, 85% seats in the government run and aided MBA /MMS institutes in the state and 65% seats at private unaided and minority institutes will be filled up through the 'MAH-MBA / MMS-CET' from 2014. Another 15% seats will be filled through the all India quota.

Dr N K Kondap , director, Kohinoor Business School (KBS) and former Vice chancellor of NMIMS, Mumbai while talking to MBAUniverse.com said, ‘’ the restart of Maharashtra CET is definitely a positive step’’ He further added that, ‘’the number of students appearing for the test is also influenced by the preparation for the test and market conditions’’. He advised the students to make the best use of this opportunity in seeking the admission to the B-Schools and enhance their career growth.

‘’The number of seats and fee structure is governed by the guidelines issued by the statutory authorities’’, said Dr Kondap in reply to a query regarding the possibilities of change in fee structure and number of seats in Maharashtra B schools.

Dr Pandit Mali, director, Indira Institute of Management Pune, said, ‘’ the restart of Maharashtra CET is certainly a positive step for the management institutes in the state. The reduction in enrollment to MBA programmes last year due to change in admission process had hit the institutes in Maharashtra very badly’’.

Dr Mali further added, ‘’ideally it should result in a higher number of candidates taking up the exam .But, I feel, DTE, Maharashtra should ensure that this change over from CMAT to CET should be well communicated to the student community; otherwise they will end up appearing only for CMAT which will reduce candidates’ (particularly from ‘Maharashtra State’ category) chances of getting in a good college as DTE Maharashtra will consider the CMAT candidates only for ‘15% All India’ quota’’.  ‘’I do not see any possibility of increase in intake by Institutes as many of them have gone with lot of vacant seats this year’’, he added.

Replying to a question regarding the possibility of change in fee structure of the B schools in Maharashtra in wake of the restart of CET Dr Mali said , ‘’ since the fee structures of MBA programs in Maharashtra are decided by the Fee Fixation committee of Maharashtra Government ,there will be a normal increase of 7-8% this year also’’
