Delivering a special public address on ‘’ Success and Happiness’’ organized by Birla Institute of Technology (BIMTECH), Greater Noida, Budhdhist Spiritual leader and Nobel peace awardee The Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso said that he learnt many lessons in compassion, non-violence and religious harmony from India. Dalai Lama’s home for over 50 years, India, also helped him refresh and refine his thoughts on Ahimsa or non-violence. He was addressing the gathering of select leaders from the corporate world, civil servants, Buddhist scholars and diplomats on Sunday December 1, 2013. The audience included 100 young Tibetan nationals studying in Bhutan who came down specially to attend this session.
He also said that, for him India is the living symbol of religious harmony for the last 1,000 years.
“While success leads to happiness and all successful people lead happy lives, Business Schools, the world over, are researching the complex relationship between success and happiness,” said Dr H Chaturvedi, Director of BIMTECH while welcoming The Dalai Lama.
Describing violence as a mental state to take advantage of others with no concern for their well-being, The Dalai Lama told a gathering of over 1,500 attendees that “bullying, cheating and corruption too are a form of violence.” He rued the dichotomy of extremely religious people following corrupt practices. He hailed India as a great example of a country that promotes a sense of compassion and responsibilities through secularism.
Underlining the role of education in achieving ‘Success and Happiness’ the Dalai Lama said that education is the best way to improve the intelligence of a human being. Deliberated use of that intelligence in decision making is what helps achieve success and happiness. The Dalai Lama said that the most desirable results come on the basis of intelligent use of emotions.
The Dalai Lama has been a staunch supporter of the 'middle-way' approach, which seeks to resolve the long-standing problems in Tibet by remaining a part of China. In 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent struggle for the liberation of Tibet. He has consistently advocated policies of non-violence, even in the face of extreme aggression.
The Dalai Lama wanted the 21st century to be a Century of Dialogue. He said that the Government of India, the US and the European Union have stood in full support of the ‘Free Tibet Movement’.
Through several anecdotes, 78-year old Dalai Lama demonstrated ‘his intellectual curiosity’ referred to by Chairperson of BIMTECH Board of Governors Mrs Jayashree Mohta that transcends spiritual arena and extends to psychology, microbiology, quantum physics and cosmology thus making him a Renaissance Man of Modern Era.
Recounting his association with India, The Dalai Lama remembered staying as a guest at the Birla House in Mussoorie in 1959 and then made India his home. In a lighter vein, he described himself as the country’s longest staying guest.
Mrs Rajashree Birla, Chairperson of the Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development, was among the attendees who heard Dalai Lama with rapt attention. Mrs Birla elaborated on the lessons of inter-religious harmony and the nature of impermanence of life that she imbibed from Buddhism.
A Bodhi tree was blessed by His Holiness Dalai Lama for planting at the BIMTECH campus at Greater Noida.
