The online registration date for second test of AICTE’s Common Management Admission Test 2014 has been extended till January 16, 2014.

As per AICTE, “In the light of latest notification issued by some of the state governments and to facilitate the aspiring candidates, the online Registration for CMAT 2014-15 (second test) has been extended.”

CMAT 2014- second test will have a 5 day test window starting from February 20, 2014 to February 24, 2014. CMAT is conducted twice a year by AICTE for admissions in the management colleges across the country. As per the AICTE notification the results of the test will be out on March 14, 2014.

Admission Process:

Although the leading 10-15 B schools accept CAT scores or the XAT scores, the next tier top B schools are likely to accept any one of the 5 national level MBA exams including CMAT. Good scores in the CMAT 2014 exam will offer participants scopes to get admitted to some of the top university and private B schools in the country.

Eleven states have been accepting CMAT scores as the only gateway to MBA admissions under the government quota, instead of the State-administered Post graduate Common Entrance Test (PGCET). The states which are likely to accept CMAT 2014 scores are

    1  Uttar Pradesh
    2  Kerala
    3  Rajasthan
    4. Chhattisgarh
    5. Nagaland
    6. Goa

    8. Gujarat
    9. Haryana
    10. Karnataka
    11. Jharkhand

AICTE’s CMAT exam controversies

The controversy first arose when on December 29, 2010, AICTE issued a press notification that said that CMAT will be the only and exclusive test for MBA admissions across the country. Education Promotion Society of India (EPSI), and many other bodies and B-schools, objected to this notification. EPSI and Jaipuria Group of B-schools took the matter to Delhi High Court where the Court struck down AICTE’s claim that CMAT will be the only test. Court allowed B-schools to use any of the six national test: CAT, XAT, MAT, ATMA, GMAT and CMAT. This judgment holds as on date.

Last year, in a sudden turn of events, Directorate of Technical Education, Mumbai announced its plan to re- conduct the Common Entrance Test for Admission to First Year MBA/MMS for 2014-2015 in Maharashtra commonly known as MAH CET 2014 to fill 85% seats in the government run and aided MBA /MMS institutes in the state and 65% seats at private unaided and minority institutes in Maharashtra. This gives CMAT 2014 a window of only 15% -35% seats in Maharashtra to compete with other national tests.

On November 21, 2013, DTE Mumbai announced the exam dates of  Online Common Entrance test (MAH MBA/MMS CET 2014) which will be conducted on Saturday, March 15, 2014 and Sunday, March 16, 2014 Prior to last year, in order to pave way for centre’s ‘one India one test’ concept the MAH CET exam was discontinued and replaced by CMAT, an online test conducted twice in a year as compared to the offline MAH CET. Admissions to the MBA institutes in the Maharashtra were carried out on the basis of Common Management Aptitude Test (CMAT) conducted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

But rural students were unable to take the online test, CMAT which was taken at the national level. Approx 39% students could not take their exams. The state also had witnessed 66% drop in number of applicants across various B schools in Maharashtra last year.

CMAT - Scoring & Ranking

The result of candidates appearing for computer based test CMAT Feb 2013-14 will be displayed with Raw Scores and Rank secured in the All India merit list.

Raw Score:

• The raw score will be calculated by assigning:

  1.  + 4 points for the correct answer
  2. - 1 point for incorrect answer
  3.   0 point for no answer

• This scoring methodology ensures that the candidates are awarded the points for what they know, while points are deducted for inappropriate random guessing. Hypothetically the range of scores will be -100 to 400 (marks).

• Candidates will be provided with raw scores for each section.

Ranking:

1. A national merit ranking will be prepared based on the raw scores. In case raw scores are identical for more than one candidate, the ranking will be based on sectional scores considered in the order of:

- Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation

- Logical Reasoning

- Language Comprehension

- General Awareness

b. In case more than one candidate secures same ranking as per the above criteria, the same Rank will be assigned to all of them but will be displayed by sorting their names alphabetically.

c. The Rank of the subsequent candidate will then be extended by the number of additional students having the same Rank. For example if three students are at 25th Rank then subsequent student will be ranked as 28th.

d. Admission authorities and institutions, however, will be free to take their own decision at the time of admission as to what weightage they wish to give to a particular section.
e. The National merit list will be prepared and displayed in the public domain indicating Roll Number, Rank and the Raw Scores.

f. The candidates will be able to see and download their score cards indicating section wise marks scored, total marks scored and Rank in the All India merit list.

Converting CMAT scores into percentile:

The different PGDM institutes, however, use their own method for selecting students with CMAT scores.

- Some B schools don’t have any particular cut off marks for CMAT. Due weightage is accorded in proportion to score obtained by candidate.

- Few B schools provide no cut-off but provide weightage in their selection criteria to the Entrance Examination

- Some B schools convert the scores into percentiles to ease the task of selection. They use the following formulae to derive the percentile:

CMAT Rank of the student = X

Total students giving CMAT = Y

Formulae:  Y – X * 100 = Percentile

                       Y

- Few B schools use a cut-off range. For example between 65% – 95% (percentile) depending upon application pool for the academic year 2013-14.
