Q. How is your Applications for Admission 2014 in comparison to last year?

The number of applications received this year is higher compared to last year. This is great news and shows the strengths of SPJIMR as all MBA exams like CAT, XAT have shown a dip in number of applicants.

Our application process for international applicants (non Indian passport holders) is also receiving encouraging response and will close on March 15.

Q. What is the Process of Profile based admissions? How do you shortlist candidates? How many candidates will be called in the category?

Most of the interviews for various B-schools are generally bunched around the same time after test scores are out. Applicants face the pressure of rushing from one interview location to the other. The applicants will have an opportunity to come and appear for the interview and talk to us early. With an early interview phase, our shortlist would be available even before the test results are available. When the test score comes in (as and when it does), applicants can just update it and that would be part of their overall scoring.

So it relieves stress of the applicants, allows us to spread out the interviews and we can look at the applicants more closely.
The 'profile based calls' or short-listing is based on profile without considering the entrance test score.
For us, profile is a combination of academic background, co-curricular activities, versatility, achievements, adversities faced and relevance of experience for the specialization applied for.

When we do the short listing, we create a ranking based on this profile of the applicants.

In the first phase, we will shortlist around 1,600 candidates. These applicants will have the option to appear for interview in Mumbai between January 23 and 25, 2014.
These applicants will need to upload their entrance test scores (CAT) before appearing for the interviews.

The shortlist of around 1600 candidates is expected to be declared on January 7, 2014.

Q. What are the evaluation matrix/criteria for the profile based calls candidates?

The method of scoring and criteria of evaluation remains the same for both groups of shortlisted candidates irrespective of when the call was given.  The final merit list takes into consideration the following:

1. Academic Performance
2. Relevance of experience for the applied specialization
3. Versatility and achievements
4. Personality
5. Communication
6. Character, Maturity and Values
7. Entrance test scores
The above parameters are evaluated in three stages:

Stage I. Data filled in the application form
Stage II.  The 1st round of group interview reconfirms the data filled in the application form - academic performance, experience, versatility, achievements and also evaluates the communication effectiveness and overall personality of the applicant. This round is a go/no go decision for 2nd round of group interview.

Stage III. 2nd round of group interview evaluates the applicant on character, maturity and values

Q. Post CAT results are out on Jan 14, what is the process of admissions? What is the likely CAT cut off? How many candidates will be called? When will that announcement happen?

The process of admission remains the same as explained earlier. It is difficult to predict the CAT cut off as it is relative to other applicants.

We expect to call around 1400 candidates post declaration of CAT/XAT results. The announcement is expected by 4th week of January post the availability of entrance test scores.

 Q. What is the evaluation matrix/criteria for the post CAT results candidates? Is it same are Profile based candidates?

The evaluation criteria for post CAT results candidates remain the same as 'profile based candidates' as explained earlier.
