Registration to MAH CET 2014 closed on February 14, 2014. Unlike the year 2013 when CMAT scores were used for admissions and hundreds of seats in various management colleges of Maharashtra were not filled due to the break in conduct of this entrance test, B schools in Maharashtra are expected to receive a good number of applications in a range of 70 to 80 thousand. MH CET will be conducted on March 15 & March 16, 2014. The test will be equally useful for the outside Maharashtra candidates as number of seats in the management institutes in Maharashtra will remain open for admission to such candidates.

In this article on key aspects and preparation tips for MAH CET 2014 MBAUniverse.com shares various aspects of Verbal Ability and Reading comprehension section in the Examination with preparation tips from Prof S. K. Agarwal, expert on Verbal Ability.

Verbal Ability expert Prof S.K. Agarwal shares the probable topics, number and pattern of questions expected in this section

1. Questions on Correction of errors in sentences –

You may get 6 to 8 questions on core grammar usage. Every question will have a long sentence divided in 5 parts-1, 2,3,4,5. The error if any will be in any one of the four parts of the sentence. The difficulty level is moderate.

Sample Question

Q. His speech was / judged by many / as one of the most important speech / given in the function. No Error

Core English grammars like Parts of speech, tenses, subject-verb agreement form the base of these questions. If you have clarity on topics like time zones, use of adjectives, adverbs, nouns, pronouns, non-finites, modifiers, conditionals, you can solve all the 8 questions in less than 4-5 minutes.

2. Fill in the blanks with correct pair of vocabulary words

These questions are on the same pattern as appear in CAT. Each question has one sentence with two blanks. There are five pairs of words below the sentence as answer options. There may be 6 to 8 questions of this type

Sample Question

You may find following types of questions with moderate level of difficulty.

(1) burn, hit  (2) gutted, engulfed  (3) fired, took  (4) burning, blazed  (5) demolished, entered

Ans. (2) gutted, engulfed. Use of passive is required after ‘were’. Use elimination method. Only two verbs exist in participle form gutted and demolished. Both are synonyms but demolish is used to destroy by force, so the most suitable is gutted. Engulfed is also used for coverage of fire.

Key tip –
Aspirants are suggested to use the elimination method to solve these questions, if they do not understand the proper meaning of given words.

3. Passage with blanks

This question type will have a passage with number of blanks. Each of the blanks is numbered. Candidates have to find the word which fits the blank appropriately.  There may be 6 to 8 questions on this pattern in Verbal Ability section.

Preparation tips

This question type is designed to test your Grammar as well as Vocabulary. There may be different forms of verbs, nouns, adjectives, prepositions or other parts of speech, words and phrases which need to be inserted at the given numbers. The best way is to form the sentence in your mind and scrutinize whether it has been correctly formed. Elimination round will again come to your rescue.

4. Correct use of synonyms and antonyms

There will be questions on choosing the words which are most opposite in meaning or which are most nearly the same in meaning to the given words. These questions are framed to test the core vocabulary of the candidates. You may find 6 to 8 questions of this type in forthcoming MAH CET.

Sample Question

There will be separate questions to choose synonyms and antonyms

Direction- Choose the word which is most OPPOSITE in meaning of the word printed in bold

Q.1. Concerned (1) Diluted (2) Liberated (3) Indifferent (4) Divested (5) Relaxed

Direction-Choose the word which is most nearly the SAME in meaning as the word printed in bold

Q.2. Connotes (1) Helps (2) Cures (3) Follows (4) Confirms (5) Implies

Ans. Q.1 (3) Indifferent is the most opposite to the given word concerned. Other words have no relevance.

Q.2 (5) Implies is the similar meaning word to connote.

Preparation tips

You need to have a good stock of vocabulary to solve such questions. It is better to revise your vocabulary, prepare flash cards-learn a few vocabulary words with their synonyms and antonyms regularly. When you learn synonyms/antonyms, remember to go through their usage also to ensure that you have not misunderstood them. For example, a woman can be ‘pretty’ but not ‘handsome’; a boy can be ‘handsome’ but not ‘pretty’. If you write ‘a pretty boy’ or ‘a handsome woman’, it can be interpreted in a different way.

5. Critical reasoning questions

There may be 8 to 12 questions on statements-assumptions; statement-conclusions; getting the concluding sentence of a para; completion of paragraph. Although sample paper does not indicate, candidates may expect questions on jumbled sentences required to be placed in a sequence to make the para meaningful.

Sample question

Statement –assumption- Four to Five questions on this concept can be found in MAH CET. In each question a statement is given, followed by two assumptions numbered I and II.  An assumption is something supposed or taken for granted. You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions and decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement.

Statement-Conclusion- Four to five questions of this type can be found in the examination. The question is followed by four conclusions numbered I, II, III and IV. The candidate has to take the given statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. You have to find out which of the conclusions logically follows from the given statements disregarding commonly known facts.

Jumbled sentences- one or two questions of this type may appear in MAH CET. The question will have jumbled sentences supposed to be arranged properly to form a meaningful paragraph.

You have to consider the statement and the following assumptions and decide which of the assumptions is implicit in the statement.

Give answer (1) if only assumption I is implicit, Give answer (2) if only assumption II is implicit

Assumptions: I. Every customer has a right to get bills regularly from the telephone company.

II. The customers complaints point to defect in the service which is expected to be corrected.

Ans. (5) Both I and II are implicit.  Read between the lines, understand the language and you have the answer

Preparation Tips

These questions apart from a fair knowledge of formation pattern and reading skill, need more and more practice. Candidates are suggested to read the statements between the lines,

6. Reading comprehension passage

Passages in MAH CET are short say about 400-500 words. Unlike CAT where a 800-900 worded passage is followed by 4-5 questions, the short passage in MAHCET is followed by 8 to 10 questions of moderate to difficult level. There may be 3-4 passages in the test and therefore, you can expect 30 to 36 questions on Reading comprehension.

How to prepare and solve

Reading the editorials in newspapers, looking up the meanings of difficult words and putting them in contextual usage will definitely help. It will be better to read the passage twice and understand it well. You may also note down the important words and sentences so that the passage is absolutely clear to you by the time you finish reading it.

Alternately, after the first reading you may read the questions and the appropriate answer options. This will help you to focus on selecting the right answer when you read the passage for the second time.
