Candidates who have been shortlisted and called for Common Admission process (CAP) for admission 2014 in above three IIMs are now in a dilemma how to choose the right B school.  The comparison becomes tough when the competitive merits and demerits of these institutes clash and render the decision taker flummoxed.

Age of the IIM will broaden the Alumni base
The saying “Old is gold” is not without substance and in case of IIMs it is more apt else the older IIMs would have not been the preferred destination. Older the IIM wider is its Alumni base and better will be your chances for higher number of options to corporate and academic connections.

 

Although all the IIMs are comparatively new, IIM Ranchi and IIM Rohtak, established in 2009, are older than IIM Trichy which was established in 2011. Nevertheless, it’s still IIM Trichy coordinating the CAP for newer IIMs.

 

Intake in Flagship Programmes
Unless all the seats are filled with the right quality of candidates, no B school will increase the intake. Although all the IIMs have increased their intake in flagship programmes during past few years, IIM Ranchi has increased its number of seats from 155 to 200 in 2014 in comparison to the strength in year 2013; IIM Rohtak has 130 seats and IIM Trichy has increased 10 seats from 100 to 110.

 

Course Fee
Higher fee structure and increasing trend sends the message either the costs or expenses at B school are high or they are not able to work out proper economics to manage it.  While IIM Ranchi has the lowest fee with Rs. 9.2 lacs, followed by IIM Rohtak with 9.3 lacs and IIM Trichy charging the highest with Rs. 10.45 lacs.

 

Full Time Faculty
Teacher student ratio is also an important factor while having a good learning experience with focused mentorship.  IIM Ranchi has smallest number of full time faculty with 13 faculty members, followed by IIM Trichy with 14 and IIM Rohtak with 16. It means IIM Ranchi has teacher student ratio of 1:15 which is 1:8 at IIM Trichy and at IIM Rohtak

 

Short listing-CAT Cut off
Although lower cut off may imply that less students are interested in the particular B school but it is not always true. Other factors like academic profile, work experience also play a major role in short listing criteria which is framed and followed by individual IIM.  CAT cut off percentile which was 97+ at IIM Trichy and Ranchi in 2013 has come down to 96.82 in 2014 short listing  at both the B schools. IIM Rohtak which had cut off with 97 in 2013 has improved a little with 97.11 in 2014.

 

Average placement
Campus Placement and career prospects down the line are the most important features of an institute that determine the Return of Investment of a candidate. This becomes the key criteria in selection out of many. IIM Ranchi tops the list with an average placement package of Rs. 12.67 lacs per annum, while the information shared by IIM Trichy, its average placement package was Rs. 12 lacs plus followed by IIM Rohtak with Rs. 9.03 lacs (including benefits).
