Every year hundreds and thousands of aspirants are forced to drop a year or worst, take admission to an average MBA college even after scoring 80+ CAT percentile.
Waste 1 one year and again prepare for CAT exam OR Take admission in any average B school left to pursue the dream of MBA.

Nearly all MBA Aspirants aspire to be a part of IIMs and it is this aspiration that sometimes turns against them. Every year hundreds and thousands of aspirants are forced to drop a year or worst, take admission to a below average MBA colleges even after scoring 80+ CAT percentile.

Why does this happen? Of the several reasons, IIMs Admission Process is also one of them. Read this article to know how IIMs are wasting the time of MBA aspirants in pursuing MBA course.

Soon after the CAT 2013 results were announced this year on January 14, 2014, speculations were raised on the minimum eligibility to apply for IIMs. While the older IIM’s minimum CAT percentile criteria was stable at overall 90 percentile, it was the new IIMs which raised the hope of CAT 2013 aspirants a notch higher.

One of the new IIMs, IIM Rohtak admission policy 2014 announced minimum CAT cut off at 85 percentile. It may sound to be very good news for admission seekers with less than 90%ile in CAT 2013 but it was a double edged sword.

How IIMs wasted MBA Aspirants precious time?

Being regarded as the highest institutions for Management study, IIMs automatically attract a lot of applications. Almost the entire lot of test takers applies for PGP programme at IIMs especially the older IIMs and the best part is that the applicants can apply to any number of IIMs. So the application pool at each IIM is largely replicated but claimed as exclusive by each institute.

Over stretched Admission Process

IIMs’ admission process is quite similar to the Indian Elections 2014. Both of them have their programme schedules stretched to around 3 or more months. Even after nearly 3 months since the CAT 2013 results were announced, IIMs have not yet come out with their final list of Batch 2014-16. IIMs admission process consists of Written Ability Test, Personal Interviews and Group Discussions. Lack of single/combined admission process in Older IIMs is also a reason for this stretched out admission process.

Igniting Ray of Hope

Decreasing the minimum CAT cut-offs, providing lucrative weightages to non- engineering graduates and work ex. candidates have resulted in more CAT aspirants trying to compete for around 3300 seats in all 13 IIMs.  Six new IIMs, with a total of 800 seats, called for almost 10,000 candidates for the combined Personal Interview and WAT commonly known as CAP. IIM Trichy which coordinated the Personal Appearance (PA) process 2014 for six new IIMs, called candidates 12 times of the proposed intake.

All this kept the hope of getting admission in IIMs alive for CAT 2013 aspirants and they kept their focus on their participation in IIMs admission process.

Top PGDM B schools Application Deadline

Top PGDM B schools like IMT Ghaziabad, MDI Gurgaon, IMI Delhi, IFMR Chennai, NIRMA University Ahmedabad, LIBA Chennai, XISS Ranchi, KJ Somaiya Mumbai, TAPMI Manipal and many more closed down their application process for Batch 2014 in the first week of February. The next set of B schools ended their application process by end of February 2014.

High hopes of being part of one of the IIMs forced many aspirants to avoid these top B schools admission process. The large number of candidates in the CAP of new IIMs also assumes significance as this likely could have a negative impact on top-tier PGDM B schools’ admission process, since 10,000 candidates choose to wait out till the CAP results are declared.

D- Day Clashes

Many smart applicants who also filled the form for Top PGDM B schools along with IIMs were left in double mind to choose which GD PI to attend as the dates clashed between PGDM B- schools and IIMs admission process. However, institutes did try to provide some respite by acknowledging and changing few students GD PI schedule but the harm was done.

Owing to great competition and attraction towards IIMs GD PI round, students solely focused on GD PI preparation for the IIMs. Also irregularities in issuance of GD PI schedule by all the IIMs, gave students no time to plan their itinerary and thus were also forced to choose one IIM GD PI round rather than many.

Horns of Dilemna

Even after the long wait, once the IIMs Final admission results are announced, a unique set of dilemma waits for those who have not been successful. This year or next year? This dreaded question haunts each unsuccessful IIM aspirant every year.

Many now realize that in between these last 3 months of preparation for IIMs, the top B schools and even the average ones have closed down their admission process. These students are left with only two choices:

a. Waste 1 one year and again prepare for CAT exam

b. Take admission in any Average B school left to pursue the dream of MBA.

Both the choices have their merits and demerits, while the first choice will waste their one year the other will hurt their self morale as they would pursue their MBA Dream in an average college despite achieving 85+ percentile.

Suggestion to MBA Aspirants:

To avoid these circumstances, MBA aspirants are advised to analyze their chances as per their past academic records, competition level and their capabilities.

One should avoid peer pressure and should aim at taking the best possible decision. Apart from IIMs, candidate must surely take part in other top PGDM B schools admission process to enhance the chances to pursue MBA the same year..

It’s always better to have a plan B instead of wasting one year or pursuing MBA from an average B-School
