It`s better to choose a B-school which caters to your specialized sector only

With nearly a dozen MBA entrance exams, cut-throat competition, economic slowdown, the current generation of MBA aspirants has become all the more eager to get admission in a B-school as quickly as possible.

It is this eagerness and over excitement that harms them in the long run. Why and How?

Why because students don’t analyze their options, why because advertisements don’t reveal the true picture of every B school, and many more.

MBA is no doubt one of the most popular and worthy degree for any graduate, seeking career opportunity in the field of management. But the way this degree is achieved, the B schools from where you study and receive your MBA degree is much more important.

Choice of B-school has become one of the key review factors in a job interview and hence one should apply his/her mind before choosing a B-school as your career growth depends on it. Huge rise in number of new MBA Colleges have further worsened the problem for the students.

So, how can you get rid of this problem? The following steps will not only help you to choose the best MBA colleges for yourself but it will also keep you away from any future troubles.

If you are an MBA aspirant looking for admissions for the batch 2014-16, it’s a must to- do-list for you:

a. Jack of all trades or the Master of one

First of all decide what you want to do with your MBA? If you want to pursue your MBA in a particular specialization, like fashion designing, computer programming, interior designing, micro-finance, energy, rural management, environment study, etc., then it’s better to choose a B-school which caters to your specialized sector only. This will lead to focused growth and job opportunities.

Institutes like Tata Institute of Social Sciences for Social work, MICA Ahmedabad for Media sector, UPES Dehradun for Energy sector, IRMA for Rural management, IIPM for plantation management, IIFT for foreign trade, RICS Amity University for Construction/Real Estate, etc are few examples of institutes who cater to a specialized sector only for those who want to be the master of one.

b. No accreditation, No admission
There is a reason why UGC, AICTE, AIU, Ministry of HRD, etc have been constituted. These are the agencies that grant accreditation & affiliations to higher institutions which is a guarantee of quality education and uniform rules and regulations.

Before taking admission to any institute, you must check its accreditation and affiliation. Companies tend to choose students who have done their MBA from an accredited B-schools rather than vice-versa.

c. Tuition fee is not the only fee you pay

Fee structure is the most important criteria for choosing a B-school and also the criteria with most number of loop holes after placement figures. Fee structure should be given the same importance as a salary structure.

MBA aspirants are advised to thoroughly go through a fee structure of a B-school. There can be various irrelevant and hidden fees under different headings. One must be ready to question the institute on any doubts regarding a particular fee. There are various headings in a fee structure of the institute like registration, examination fees, admission fees, caution money, boarding, lodging, security fees, library, foreign tours, other fees, etc.

Students must get clarification on all the different fees from the institute management. One must also enquire about the various payment schedule and modes of payment allowed along with late fee charges and fines

d. Who teaches you?

Faculty is the core of every B-school. You are taking admission in a MBA college to gain knowledge on various aspects and hence faculties will play the most essential role in your 2 years at the campus.

Students must check the number of faculties’ especially permanent faculties and visiting faculties. B-school tend to include the names of all the professors visited their campus once, hence you must give due diligence to the list of faculty while taking admission in to the B-school. One should also check for their qualification and average experience. Faculty with more number of industry experiences will provide you more insight into the corporate world.

e. Placement figures: The Final Output

Everyone does MBA because of the programme’s capability to provide huge paychecks, but not all institutes have the same luck.
Before finalizing your admissions, check the official placement statistics of last couple of years. Few key points to analyze are number of companies that participate, number of offers, average domestic salary projection, international placements. You must also look deep into the sectoral and functional placement trends. This will provide you answers to all your specialization queries.

Many average B-schools tend to provide misleading information by doing dubious calculation to project increased average/median placements or 100% placements. Get in touch of alumni to get a better picture of the placements @ respective B-schools.

f. Industry- Institute collaborations
MBA is done to be a part of the industry, the corporate world and hence it is quite important for the institute to have a good connection & engagement with the industry.

Industry- Institute collaborations should not be limited only to industrial visits, lectures by MDs & HRs, etc. Institute which has the most active Corporate Relations Committee will in turn have a good placement season.

Choose a B-school that engages its students in various industry training programmes, mentoring, on the field training, quality summer internships, Industrial projects, etc. This will not only enhance your knowledge but also your resume too.

Pre-checking all these crucial aspects before taking admission, will help you to pin point the best MBA colleges for yourself.

Don’t do the following while taking Admissions

There are several things that one must avoid while taking Admission in order to be away from any losses or tensions.

- Don’t submit your original document
Various MBA colleges ask for your original documents only to be returned back after 2 years of course completions. Don’t give it! This is a trap to keep you away from choosing any other B-school during the admission season. Only provide your originals for verification purpose and keep it safe with you.

- Full payment of fees? Don’t be a fool
Every B-school provides various payment schedules or installments. Avoid full payment of fees in one go during admissions. This will always keep you away from any financial loss.

- Keep away from Admission agents
Admission agents and brokers lure students to provide admission at low fees at top B-school while all they do is earn money and provide you wrong B-schools. Always directly contact to B-school admission offices for best results and informations.
