The decision making is tough and need intense research if we have to decide on one among the top B schools
High CAT percentilers with 95+ queue up for admission to these B schools due to the excellent learning experience

It is usually not a tough decision to opt for an above average B school when we have to decide one out of many. The decision making is tough and need intense research if we have to decide on one among the top B schools.  The reason is obvious. All the top rated management institutes have finely designed courses and specializations which are renowned and acknowledged nationally and globally.

The facilities are excellent, fee structure is more or less the same and none of the institutes lag behind in providing the best learning experience, so what should be the key focus areas while taking such a decision assuming that you have received the final admission call from the top 3 B- schools namely IMT Ghaziabad; MDI Gurgaon and SPJIMR Mumbai. MBAUniverse.com analyses these institutes on key parameters and has taken the initiative to help the aspirants in sorting and coming out of the state of indecision.

Statutory status of the B schools

IMT Ghaziabad, MDI Gurgaon and SPJIMR Mumbai are all private run top notch B schools with no funding from the Government.  These B schools hold the envious position even for many Government funded Management institutes where number of seats go vacant every year. High CAT percentilers with 95+ queue up for admission to these B schools due to the excellent learning experience and other career building features which are unique in these institutes. Such is the reputation of these B schools that candidates wait for the admission calls from them, even if they find themselves in the range of receiving calls from newer and a few of the older IIMs.

The legacy

The older the Institute the richer and versatile will be the learning experience apart from large alumni base.  Going by the year of establishment MDI Gurgaon holds the top position as it inherits the history since 1973 followed by IMT Ghaziabad, established in 1980 and SPJIMR in 1981. Accordingly, these institutes have produced great Managers and skilled professionals who stand 2nd to none in the field of Management.

Number of batches have passed out of these institutes and are positioned at high places in the corporate and industrial sectors.  The positive competition in achieving yet more heights of excellence in management education goes on among these institutes.

The Intake

Number of seats in flagship PGDM programmes at IMT Ghaziabad is maximum. Despite this fact, getting admission with a high score still remains difficult. Out of 600 seats 420 are for various PGDM programmes and remaining 180 are for dual country PGDM programme.

MDI Gurgaon having an intake of 335 aspirants is a hot and much sought after destination for management aspirants. It being the oldest and versatile institute is preferred to a few of IIMs even.  The admission seekers with 97+ CAT percentile are sometimes disappointed for not being able to secure admission in this B school.

SPJIMR Mumbai has an intake capacity of 276 students in the flagship programme. The highly ranked and preferred b school started the profile based final admission round immediately after the CAT results were announced on January 14, 2014 and has completed its admission process.  The reputation of this B school sometimes overshadows many IIMs.  Candidates, if admitted in this B school do not prefer going to any other B school including many IIMs.

Fee structure

All the institutes are self funded and accordingly have a fairly high fee structure. SPJIMR Mumbai charges Rs.10.5 lakhs as tuition fee for 2 years PGDM followed by MDI Gurgaon with Rs.14.91 lakhs. IMT Ghaziabad is close on heels with the highest at Rs. 15 lakhs.  Sometimes candidates from varying strata and economic backgrounds are unable to foot the bill. But banks are more than happy to extend their helping hand in providing education loan to such students as they are aware what they are financing now, will come back with good interest amount within a few years of candidates’ passing out of the B school.

Faculty; the base for teacher student ratio

Core faculty at the B school decides the learning experience in imparting the education at the institute and is the main factor in providing adequate mentorship to the students.  The better is the teacher student ratio, the better will be the mentorship at the institute.

MDI Gurgaon has 80 faculty members for 335 students in all the courses while the number is 70 at IMT Ghaziabad for 420 students. SPJIMR Mumbai has 49 core faculty for 276 students in flagship PGDM programme.

Admission criteria and short listing

All the three B schools accept CAT scores and the range of percentile cut off lies somewhere between 92-95 depending upon the academic record, work experience, gender diversity and performance in GDPI round. While SPJIMR places more importance on profile, IMT Ghaziabad apart from other tests in final admission round emphasizes on case study and discussion. MDI Gurgaon also has tough GDPI round to judge the candidate’s capability and approach in decision making.

Sometimes candidates with high percentile of 99 do not qualify the final admission round whereas candidates with low percentile of 93-94 performing well are able to convert the call in these top rated B schools.

Average Placement

This part has more significance as the Return on Investment should be calculated before taking the admission especially in this period of economic slowdown.  Although it is difficult to decide what package you would get after 2 years, you can very well check the past campus placement trends.  If the trends are encouraging and average package goes on rising, it could be your dream institute. If there are drastic fluctuations you may not be sure of going for admission in it.  Your money as well as precious 2 years of life is going to be spent in the B school, so decide judiciously.

Average package offered at SPJIMR Placement in 2014 was Rs. 17.2 lakhs. It was increased from Rs.16.13 lakhs in 2013. The highest domestic package stood at Rs.29.5 lakhs.
MDI Gurgaon had an average placement of Rs. 14.74 in 2014 showing an increase from Rs. 12.8 lakhs in 2013. The highest offered package was Rs. 23.36 lakhs in 2014 again showing an increase from Rs.21.8 lakhs in 2013.

IMT Ghaziabad highest placement package in 2014 also increased to Rs.23 lakhs from Rs.17.25 lakhs in 2013 while average placement stood at Rs.8.7 lakhs.
