With final merit lists for MBA/PGDM admission 2014 gradually being published by the top rated B schools and students getting admission offers from more than one or two institutes, it has become more imperative to take a decision where to go before investing huge amount of money to pursue the management course from your dream B school.

MDI Gurgaon and NITIE Mumbai have already published their final merit lists and have asked the candidates to deposit the fee by May 5, 2014 otherwise the candidature may be cancelled and the students in waiting list would be given the chance of admission.

IIM Indore and IIM Kozhikode are about to announce the lists of short listed candidates in a week’s time with similar provisions. It’s therefore high time to give a thought which one to choose out of the above four top B schools.

Focus on Legacy

NITIE Mumbai the oldest among above four, was established in 1963 and has consistently been performing well with a good Alumni base. However, the B school is more sought after by core engineering graduates as the focus is more on Engineering and technical areas.

MDI, Gurgaon, established in 1973 is a private management institute which has become a synonym of consistent growth.  The B school has grown to be one of the most sought after Management College in India along with IIMs. Its large alumni base is spread all over the world and more and more candidate are turning towards entrepreneurship after completing the PGDM programme.

IIM Indore and IIM Kozhikode both were established in the year 1996.  The brand IIM has its own taste and therefore, despite being slightly new candidates who are offered admissions to other institutes usually like to wait for shortlist announcements by these institutes.

The Intake

Number of seats in flagship PGDIM and PGDISEM programmes at NITIE Mumbai are 340. Both the programmes are 2 years residential and are the most sought after ones. Despite so many seats it is difficult to find the admission in this institute and sometimes even 99 CAT percentilers do not get admission to this B school.

MDI Gurgaon having an intake of 335 aspirants is a hot and much sought after destination for management aspirants. It is a versatile institute and sometimes is preferred to a few of IIMs.  The admission seekers with 98+ CAT percentile are sometimes disappointed for not being able to secure admission in this B school.

IIM Kozhikode has an intake of 360 seats in its 2 years’ residential PGP programme. With a consistent increase in seats the flagship programme at IIM K is a preferred one.

IIM Indore is a hot destination IIM after IIM A, B, C. It has maximum intake among all the above four B schools with 470 candidates across the PGPM programmes. Candidates, if admitted in this B school do not prefer going to any other B school.

Fee structure

This is the most important area now to be considered before proceeding to secure admission in any of the above 4 b schools. The factor becomes all the more important as you have to take the decision before May 5, 2014 else MDI Gurgaon and NITIE may close the gates and your candidature is at risk.

NITIE has probably the lowest fee structure among all the above 4 B schools. They are asking a fee of Rs. 4.19 lakhs to be deposited by means of single demand draft latest by May 5, 2014. The total fee may be slightly more but not much more. If you are an engineer and wish to go to NITIE, the advisory is not to wait too long and proceed with your admission plans.

MDI has announced its fee for 2014-16 as Rs. 14.91 lakhs. This B school will accept fee in installments but candidates have to deposit Rs. 75,000/- in May 2014 towards admission fee else their candidature may be cancelled.

IIM Kozhikode and IIM Indore although have not announced their final merit lists for admission 2014-16 batch, their fee structure is may not give any reprieve to this expensive management programme. While you will have to shell out about Rs. 10 lakhs for IIMK, the hole in your pocket will be bigger with Rs. 13 lakhs for IIM Indore.

It is up to you to either wait for the final merit lists from these two IIMs or proceed with NITIE or MDI

Faculty decides the Learning Experience

Core faculty at the B school decides the learning experience in imparting the education at the institute and is the main factor in providing adequate mentorship to the students.  The better is the teacher student ratio, the better will be the mentorship at the institute.

MDI Gurgaon has 80 faculty members for 335 students in all the courses while the number is 52 at NITIE Mumbai for 340 students.

IIM Kozhikode is equipped with 75 core faculty for 360 students followed by 61 faculty members apart from visiting faculties at IIM Indore for 470 students.

Since all the above 4 B schools accept CAT scores and the range of percentile cut off lies somewhere between 90-94 depending upon the academic record, work experience, gender diversity and performance in GDPI round, except the fact that NITIE is an engineering based b school, candidates may expect their names appear in the final admission lists of all the above institutes. Sometimes candidates with high percentile of 99 do not qualify the final admission round whereas candidates with low percentile of 93-94 performing well are able to convert the call in these top rated B schools due to the above cited factors.

ROI: Average Placement is the key

This part has more significance as the Return on Investment should be calculated before taking the admission especially in this period of economic slowdown.  Although it is difficult to decide what package you would get after 2 years, you can very well check the past campus placement trends.  If the trends are encouraging and average package goes on rising, it could be your dream institute. Your money as well as precious 2 years of life is going to be spent in the B school, so decide judiciously.

MDI Gurgaon had an average placement of Rs. 14.74 in 2014 showing an increase from Rs. 12.8 lakhs in 2013. The highest offered package was Rs. 23.36 lakhs in 2014 again showing an increase from Rs.21.8 lakhs in 2013.

NITIE Mumbai has not yet published its final placement data 2014. However, going by 2013 data it faired well with highest domestic salary of Rs. 24.12 lakhs and average placement package of Rs. 11.3 lakhs. It is expected that the highest and average placement would have improved in placement 2014.

IIM Kozhikode recorded the highest placement package in 2014 at Rs.32 lakhs and average salary at Rs. 13.6 lakhs. Major areas of placement were marketing and sales with 28% and Finance with 21% of the total batch size. There were 25 international offers made to the students across the sectors.

IIM Indore was also successful in beating the recessionary trends. The placement 2014 saw the highest package at Rs. 32 lakhs and average placement at Rs. 12.13 lakhs. With the 100% placement for all the  475 students seeking placements  26% were placed in sales and marketing; 24% in consulting; 20% in finance; 13% in General Management; 10% in IT and 7% in Operations
