Anxious about the forthcoming CAT 2014, MBA aspirants has been raising numerous queries- whether CAT 2014 will have the same pattern, number of sections; whether there would be any surprise elements, whether the number of questions would increase. Neither the IIM Indore, the CAT 2014 convening IIM nor TCS the test conducting agency for CAT 2014 is ready to open the Pandora’s Box to reassure the CAT aspirants who have been preparing for this most preferred MBA/PGDM entrance test for last many months.
TCS won in grabbing the 5 years CAT conducting contract from the exam year 2014, leaving behind not only Prometric but also many other bidders. 2014 will be the first year for Tata Consultancy Services to conduct CAT, while the CAT 2013 convening IIM Indore has been re- designated to convene CAT 2014 with Dr Rohit Kapoor as the convenor.
Anguished with the manner and lack of transparency in Prometric conducted CAT, many candidates not satisfied with the system preferred to take the legal route for addressing their grievances. According to the reports 95K candidates scored zero or negative score in CAT 2013. This led to filing a plea in the Indore High Court as IIM Indore convened the CAT 2013 and jurisdiction for any dispute lies to Indore Court.

Overall expected changes
CAT pattern has got stabilized since 2011 with 2 sections and 60 questions to be solved in 140 minutes in the online computer based test. With TCS now taking the guard, it won’t be surprising if there are perceptible changes in CAT 2014. The modalities of CAT 2014 are being finalised by TCS in consultation with the CAT 2014 convening IIM Indore. Going by the reputation and expertise of TCS, aspirants can expect the CAT 2014 as better organised, smooth with almost no technical problems during the testing window but the test may contain questions of higher LOD, there could be more sections and more number of questions.
CAT 2014 the first TCS conducted test may have overall make over. Changes could be in the form of reduction in number of testing days and sessions. Instead of running for 21 days, it could end up in 15 days. Besides CAT 2014 may contain more number of questions, increased/reduced level of difficulty, questions on analogy, analytical ability, number of RC passages and different type of questions on jumbled paragraphs than what we have been facing during past 4-5 years.

Expected Changes in VALR
While questions in Quant section are not so much affected except that one or two topics mark their prominence to a different degree in CAT, this is Verbal Ability section that bears the brunt of any substantial change since the syllabus and scope of questions is immense in this section.
TCS in its recruitment process has been placing questions on analytical ability, the section so far has not been so prominent in CAT but more questions on this topic can be expected in CAT 2014.
Questions on Error correction and Vocabulary may also take a swing in CAT 2014. The traditional type of questions may see some changes or the forgotten types may re-appear in some different form.
Question types like Jumbled paragraphs may throw some surprises with more number of questions, type of questions asking not only out of context sentence but also opening and closing sentences.
CAT has so for been asking questions to complete the ‘Last sentence of paragraph’, this time it could be the ‘First sentence of paragraph’ along with the traditional ones.
Number of Reading comprehension passages could increase and passage may become shorter. Number and style of questions may not reshuffle much.

Although neither the TCS nor IIM Indore has opened the cards regarding any expected change in CAT 2014, aspirants are advised not to leave anything to chance while moving ahead in their preparation journey. Many question types that used to appear in CAT earlier and have now stopped appearing, should also be revisited and understood.
The road ahead for TCS is not very easy. The testing agency will have to deploy all out efforts to increase the number of CAT 2014 test takers as well as to ensure that CAT 2014 is conducted smoothly. The brand CAT needs a makeover to attract more candidates especially women and non-engineers.
