Sparta: Sneha my question is different. We have heard toppers saying that CAT is not easy but yet those who get more than 96+ percentile are less in number than those who get between say 85-90 or 90-95..I want to know what it takes to achieve that extra 2 or 3 percentile in CAT..If I have scored 95 percentile or 98, what should I do to make sure that I achieve 99+ percentile..Can u share from your experiences as to what we should do?

IMC2014

Sneha Mittal: Hi Sparta. See after giving the exam I realized I could have scored more if I did not worry too much during the exam. There were a lot of questions which I knew were right, but since I had already attempted a lot of questions, I was scared of negative marking, so I left a few questions. After coming out of the exam, on solving them again I realized I was right with the answers, but I did not attempt them. Had I attempted them, I would have easily scored 99+ percentile.

Now this is what makes the difference between 99+ percentilers and the rest. The ones who work hard achieve a score of 90+ percentile. Those who work smart get 95+ percentile, but those who work hard and are smart enough achieve 99+ percentile.

So, I would advice, first start working hard when you have enough time in hand. Do not leave topics for end time. Next, keep enough time for revisions and mock tests. In the end, do not worry too much and you can surely easily achieve 99+ percentile. Hope that answers your query. Read More..

Suraj Singh: Hii aayush. I guess CA is in itself a very good career.. Why did you go for MBA? I mean what exactly were you looking for from MBA?

IMC2014

aayushagarwal: Hii Suraj. I agree with you that CA in itself is a very good career, however, I wish to do MBA because 'CA gave me depth, but MBA will give me breadth'. As one moves up the corporate ladder into more responsible positions, it's important to have different perspectives and an overall approach for the issue at hand. Plus an MBA certification is quite necessary, if you are looking for core finance roles. Read more..

Nick: I just need to know your prep strategy? I have heard so many of it but till now I never convinced in any because it was all unbelievable strategies. As a simple average student, it may be difficult for me. So could you please share me some strategies which can be followed?

IMC2014

ankurkhanna: Hello Nick. Surely will try and guide you for your CAT Preparations. Foremost thing is to set a Target for yourself. Know your capabilities whether you can give long continuous sittings or you are comfortable with short 2-3 hrs sittings. Are you planning to give 2014 CAT? If yes, then this is the right time to start your preparations. You can start by devoting 1-2 hrs every day, each for Quant and Verbal. Get your basics right. Solve as many books/Material/online papers as possible and chalk out your weak areas. Gradually, you can increase your studying hours to as much as you can since exam slots will commence from October 2014. All the best for your preparations. Read More

megha.verma I want to know, how difficult is it to prepare for so many MBA exams at the same time? Also is CAT exam preparation more difficult or preparing for GD PIs  .I am weak in maths and my friends say that I can’t achieve high percentile in CAT without solid maths knowledge...is that true?  :

IMC2014

Sneha Mittal: Hi Megha. It is not very difficult to prepare for all examinations together because most of them have the same syllabus. Do not stress out on giving so many exams. You have almost a month to be specifically prepared for a paper. And a month is more than enough to work out on the areas of those exams which are different from CAT examination.

Next, you ask me whether preparing for GDPI is more difficult or preparing for CAT. I think I cannot compare any of them for you, as in case you do not clear the papers or do not achieve a high percentile, there is no meaning preparing for GDPI. Preparing for both is equally difficult. Preparing for the examination is the first step to ensure admission to a good college. Next, hone your communication and general knowledge skills to prepare for the GDPI.

My advice would be, do not worry about GDPI right now. Just concentrate on clearing the exams. You can join a coaching institute later to help you prepare for GDPI.

As you said you are weak in maths, I would suggest you work on your skills and improve. What your friends say is true, but don't let that get you down. Maths can easily be worked on with practice. Find the topics you are weak in, and start working now. Work hard on the topics you find difficult, and don't be shy to take help from peers and teachers.

See, scoring well in both the sections is important. You cannot expect a high percentile by being good at a single area. In addition to that, there are sectional cut-offs at college, hence, you will need to work on both sections equally. Read More.

pankaj_CATking: Which was tougher to crack: CAT 2013 or XAT 2014? What is the real difference between both the exams? Did you prepare separately for both?

IMC2014

anubhavkunnel: Well, to be honest, CAT and XAT are 2 totally different tests.CAT is a time challenging test. You need to identify the easier questions at the beginning itself and also try to maintain a good accuracy. On the other hand, XAT may appear relatively tougher at first. The key is to attempt only the questions you are sure of. This is the reason you can get a 99 percentile in XAT even if you attempt barely 40% of the questions with a good accuracy.

For CAT, I practiced a lot and improved my speed. I focused mainly on the DI section and LR section. I scored as much as possible in these 2 sections. I was a bit wary of the RCs and so attempted very carefully.

For XAT, the decision making section was a bit of a problem for me. So, in the run up to the exam, I concentrated mainly on this section only. Also, all the major exams would be finished by the time of XAT. So, the preparation you have done for CAT will suffice. The only extra thing you need to concentrate on is the Decision Making section because XLRI puts a lot of emphasis on this section.

Hope this helps. All the best..Read More.

Amit k: Hi Anubhav, I am a working CA & want to attempt 2014 CAT. I can have 5 hours of study on weekday & 8 hours of study on weekend. I don't know quant except average, profit & few other topics related to Accounts. My English is poor. I find DI & LR easy. What do you suggest?

1. Have I sufficient time?

2 How can I allocate time to different parts of CAT?

3 In Verbal ability, how many passages should I read daily? How many times should I give to learn VOCAB.

4 How should I prepare for DI & reasoning. Can I do DI in October itself?

5 Should I go to crash course coaching as it will consume my time and I don't want to do that.

IMC2014

anubhavkunnel: Hi Amit, great to know that you are a CA. This will work in your favor because the IIMs look for diversity. I will answer your queries order wise:

(1)You have sufficient time because CAT is 5-6 months away.5 hours on weekdays and 8 hours on weekends is more than enough

(2)Since you say that you are weak in quant and VA, spend 70% of your preparation time on these areas and the rest on DI and LR

(3)Remember that VA consists of many areas apart from passages. To improve your vocab, I suggest you to read the editorial of a newspaper like The Hindu daily. It will not only improve your reading speed but also your vocabulary skills. Give a mock on Vocab alternative days to see how much you progress

(4)Don't delay prep for DI till October. If you are confident in DI, then spend more time on other areas but simultaneously try to give at least 2 sectional tests in DI a week

(5)If you have already gone for coaching earlier, then there is no need to go again. However, enroll in a test series because mocks give you an idea of where you stand and which areas need improvement.

In the beginning, more time should be spent on preparation. With the passage of time, you should be giving more time to mocks and less time to preparation. All the best. Read more.

charu agarwal: People say once you prepared for CAT ,you can easily crack all the other entrance exams, As you have attended as many exams please share your view on it?

IMC2014

Sneha Mittal: Hi Charu, I agree there. Once you prepare well for an examination like CAT, others are much easier, but that doesn't means they don't need enough time and preparation. For example:

CMAT: For CMAT, you need to keep your GK finely tuned. You cannot prepare that in a day or two. So keep that in mind while you prepare for CAT, Read newspapers daily, and stay updated with the current affairs.

XAT: Practice essay writing on a regular basis. As XAT has an essay writing section which makes a huge difference in the final selection. Also, as XAT has Maths on a tougher side, do not panic when you are unable to solve the questions. Please do not attempt if you are unable to solve any question. Even a score of 5-10 will get you 90 percentile in XAT. Prepare for the other sections by seeing the previous year papers.

NMAT: Utilizing and planning your time and attempt strategy is important here. Appear for a lot of mock tests, and develop a strategy as to how you should go about it, and which section you should choose first. Next, make sure you attempt all the questions. Keep the last 2 minutes for randomly attempting the unattempted questions. This is because NMAT does not have any negative marking, so there's no harm in attempting.

CET: Appear for a lot of mock tests. See the solutions and solve the previous year papers. This will help you know which questions are too difficult to solve and hence should be left or attempted randomly (no negative marking here also). Try to speed up by giving mock tests.

TISS: Appear for mock tests and form your strategies. Read More..

Umesh_Utd: Hello Anubhav, First of all a big big congo for your achievement. I wanted to ask certain questions:-

1. Can you please share about how many questions you attempt in Section 1 and 2 of CAT?

2. Recently I gave my AIMCAT....Quant (Accuracy was near about 70 %) but for VA (it was pathetic).....how should I prepare for VA?

3. Also, how should I prepare for TSD, T & W.(a bit weak in those two)

IMC2014

anubhavkunnel: Hello Umesh. I will answer your questions in the same order that you posted.

1. How will knowing the number of attempts of mine help you? The difficulty level varies from slot to slot. So don't have a pre-conceived notion about the number of attempts.

2. For VA, try to read the editorial section of a newspaper daily. It will build your vocabulary. Initially, try to maintain a good accuracy than more number of attempts. Practice the previous papers and identify the areas you are weak in.

3. Be perfect with the basics of the areas you mentioned. Practice a simple level of questions first and only after you have been able to solve them go for the next higher level. Finally solve the questions from the previous papers in these 2 areas. Read more..
