Why you should opt for MBA?

This question would have been asked & answered to you by numerous people around you. Everyone has its own take on this very trendy question.

But do you really know why you want an MBA? How MBA will change your life or how it will help you to achieve what you have dreamt of as your career goal?

For a change, this time we decide not to convey you the same ‘Jargon’ of why to do MBA and how MBA helps. This time we let you hear out to people who have succeeded in fulfilling their dreams in real.

This series of article on “How MBA degree changed my Life” will bring forth the stories of MBA students who are now on their journey to Success and they give this credit to their MBA Degree.

Today’s article is about Abhinav Kamal, Class of 2010-1012 of PGDM (Marketing/ IT) at IMT Nagpur. He is currently the Managing Director of Ten Motion Arts, Bangalore.

Read below the story of Abhinav and how he believed in creating an opportunity rather than just waiting for one.

Abhinav Kamal, Here you go..

Hii I am Abhinav.

Let me tell you a story.

When I was six years old, someone asked me what I would like to be once I grow up. Hardly did I know about career options then (obvious) and my likings but I replied, “An engineer”. I did not know who an engineer was or what it takes to be an engineer but I thought I should be one. For me, an engineer was the person who climbs up the electric pole next to my house whenever there was darkness around.

A couple of years later I was in fourth standard and I had this little crush on a girl in my class. At the same age I developed good skills in cricket and I took special interest in the game and played it for most of the times. Every night when I use to go to bed, I pictured a typical filmy scene with her though I was only ten years old and I didn’t know what the climax should be. And of course, though I had interest in cricket, it was not the thing which kept me awake at night.

The first story indicates a perfect example of social conditioning where Society in general set the norms which shape our behavior within the social system and what we are supposed to do once we grow up.

The second story hints at the hidden talent within us which we should explore and make a career out of it. This is what we describe as one’s passion.

So, many people would have asked you by now - what do you want to do in your career / life?

And let me guess what most of you would have replied- “I want to get the best job, highest salary package, a nice car, unlimited purchasing power, secured life and a beautiful wife of course”.

The focus is on money. Isn’t it? Perhaps, you can be an onion seller and you will be richer, only if your aim is to earn more.

Sorry to break your heart but you would have been asked wrong question all these days. The above parameters should not be confused as achievements but the outcome of your achievements.

The right question is, and what you should ask yourself – Why do I want to be what I aspire to be!

Ask yourself these three questions for clarity –

1. What do I want to achieve in my career.

2. Why I want to achieve it.

3. How can I achieve it.

It took time for me to find out the answers to the above, but here they are

1. I want to be a successful independent film maker.

2. I am good at it and this is my passion which keeps me on the edge.

3.I should start my own production company.

And that’s why I opted to have an MBA. I opted for MBA because for me management lessons and creativity inter-fuse with each other all the time. For me a film is a product. A director is a leader, captain and a creative manager for its team in the process of making the product. The process of filmmaking demands many intelligent decisions to be taken, keeping in account of my available resources. I need to know the segment of audience to which I intend to focus the film on. I feel management is not just about running business and making profits, it is about being informed and making better decisions, irrespective of the field of work.

Merits of doing MBA:

“Management is a way you live your life. It is an art of implementing your crazy ideas but with a proper blue print.”

Yes, right, things getting pretty clear here. Consider yourself to be extremely wrong if you want to pursue an MBA because of the following reasons –

1 I want to have an MBA because I want to earn more than I do now. Yes you will have good chance to earn more after having an MBA but you can consider to be an onion seller too, remember?

2. I want to have an MBA because I am bored in my current job. Trust me, any job for you will always be boring and frustrating, even after having an MBA, if you are not doing what interests you. Make a career out of your passion and be an enlightened soul.

3. I want to have an MBA because I am an engineer. Guys, please opt for Masters in Technology and get married.

4. I want to have an MBA because my friends are taking up CAT. Seriously?

Opt for an MBA only when you believe that it will empower you to make better decisions, as an MBA should be considered as a tool which will enable you to realize your dream, which will be your transport to your destination. And when you consider MBA as a tool to reach your destination, it will have its benefits. An MBA will typically give you skills and knowledge; it will teach you managerial skills which will in turn empower you to deal with real time situations and their resolutions.

The skill-set taught in MBA will provide you with the hands-on training for dealing with real work business problems. Eventually, you can branch out as an independent entrepreneur. And most important, social networking during the MBA academic term will help you in establishing business contacts and referrals. In the long run, you can avail these contacts in improving your business position in the market.

Please do not think that having an MBA from the highest rated Institute of Management in India will make a considerable difference in your career compared to having an MBA from any other institutes. The former will give you a platform where people will listen to you for the first minute, while the latter will encourage you to make your own platform and outshine your competitors. At the end of the day, it’s your endurance which matters. Look at a few greatest innovators of the world and their educational backgrounds.

It’s in our genes to push ourselves from an insecure position to a secure position. And that’s the basic reason why most of us do not have the courage to follow our passion because it challenges the status quo. It disturbs us with questions such as what if? The brave ones take the leap of faith and this, ladies and gentlemen, segregates an extra ordinary from an ordinary.

Aspire to be an extra ordinary! Follow your Dreams!

At the end, learn to be a leader and not just a manager. Motivate people around and help them understand what their passion is. Work hard and smart (yes in that order) to achieve your goals and you will never have Monday blues.

My Success Story:

I graduated as a Computer Science Engineer and thereafter I had 3 years of work experience working as a Software Engineer in a Multi-National Software Company in Bangalore. Bored of the job and with the goal to do something creative in Business, I took up 2 year PGDM at IMT Nagpur to understand the important aspects and practical details in running a business. Though I always wanted to join a creative agency, I tried my best to get a job for myself in all major agency in India, but I was rejected on the grounds of my prior qualifications.

During my MBA, I decided to open my own creative agency as I believed in creating an opportunity rather than just waiting for one.  I had organized National Short Film Festival at IMT Nagpur in my first year at IMT Nagpur (2010) itself where the aim was to connect all the creative aspirants in Film making on one platform. It was a huge success. I made around 20+ films while I was at campus and a few won awards as well.

After coming out of IMT Nagpur, I established Ten Motion Arts Pvt Ltd. which is a creative agency and a production house. We are registered creative vendors for a few big MNC in Bangalore. Recently we introduced a new domain of work in our company – Digital Media Marketing.  I am an award winning Film maker where one of my Documentaries had won the 2nd best film Award at Cannes International Aesthetic Film Festival in the year 2013. We have been covered in The National and local media. Now we aim for Oscars in years to come.

Best of luck to all of you!
