It is a case of special equation. 3x + 5y + 7z =49 5x + 8y + 11z = 78
here x, y , z are pencil , ruler and eraser.
Now multiply first equation by 3 and second equation by 2. And now subtract first from second x + y + z =9

A number when divided by a divisor leaves a remainder of 24. When twice the original number is divided by the same divisor, the remainder is 11. What is the value of the divisor?

As remainder is 24 so divisor will be greater than 24 and 2*24 when divided by the divisor leave remainder 11... So divisor will be 37. Read More..

The cost price of 16 articles is the same as the selling price of 12 articles. Find the loss/profit percentages. What’s the solution of this question?

IMC2014

Ankit Jindal
Expert

16 CP = 12 SP
we know, SP = CP + profit
hence, 16 CP = 12 CP + 12 Profit........... or 4 CP = 12 profit . . so profit is 1/3 or 33.33% of cost price

Sir I am sharing one question to you please suggest the answer and idea, how to solve it.
How many of the following numbers are divisible by 132? 264, 396, 462, 792, 968, 2178, 5184, 6336

A. 4        B. 3      C. 6          D. 8

Any short trick for this?

IMC2014

Ankit Jindal
Expert
Take the factors of 132, which are 3, 4 and 11.. Now eliminate those options which don't have 3, 4 and 11 as the factors.
To check the divisibility of any number, either we can directly check the dividend by dividing it by the divisor or the dividend must also be divisible by each and every factor of the divisor. So, if any one of the factor doesn't divide the dividend completely, it means that divisor is not a factor of dividend.
For example,

If we need to check whether 1245 is a factor of 9846125 or not. Instead of dividing the 9846125 from 1245, we can check that 3 is a factor of 1245 while it doesn't divide 9846125. It means 1245 is not a factor of 9846125. Get More Examples here..

Sir, please explain about parallelism in sentence correction?

IMC2014

Parallelism means similar action used in the same time zone. Therefore, same tense structure is used to describe parallel action. For example take two types of sentences in past continuous 1-based on interruption 2-based on parallel action
type-1-
I was studying when she called. (studying - continuous action, she called at a point of time, so interruption)

type-2- I was watching TV and my mother was cooking food; While I was watching TV my mother was cooking food. (Both the actions were in progress at the same time). Read More..

Suggest the strategy for solving para jumble problems?

IMC2014

verbalexpertskagarwal
Expert

Dear Merugu,
I share the key tips below. For more practice you can visit MBAUniverse.com site

  • Read the parajumbles attentively and quickly
  • Find out the central idea/message – whether in the beginning or in the end to make it clear.
  • Search for connectors to sentences e.g. conjunctions, personal (He/she/it/they/their etc), relative (Who, whose, that, which etc.), Demonstrative (These, those, this, that etc.) pronouns as they indicate that they must have been used in place of some noun- proper/common etc. So if you can find the original one-you may get the feel to place the original sentence first. So find the link between the sentences.
  • Mark & strike out the words & sentences that create confusion in your mind
  • Think what would be the order, if you wrote the same sentences.
  • Connect and replace the marked out confused words & sentences.
  • By now you would have understood the things discussed in the parajumbles
  • Put the sentences in the most suitable order as you have understood. Get more Tips Here..

Sir, jotting down some of the high frequency words from news paper, makes me learn 6 to 7 words, and regular reference helps in contextual usage.

IMC2014

verbalexpertskagarwal
Expert

This is very good Gaurav. Please remember not to try to correct the person who in your view is not using the word in right context. The reason is he may be using it in some other context, so the best thing is to memorize how he is using the same word in different context and refer the usage in dictionary.

Another tip to improve the vocab is to refer to the word roots. Most of the mouthful long words are not in fact long. If you find their prefixes and suffixes that form their roots, you can very well understand the word, its usage and on the top of it the roots will become handy for you to understand other long words with similar prefixes/suffixes.

So continue the journey and crack CAT 2014 with a high percentile.

Sir I want to know that how to use who and whom as we because who is the subjective and whom is objective its act as a objective but some time its use looks so mysterious. For example

I consulted an attorney whom I met in New York. cf., I consulted him.

Here this objective but working like both explain ..... this really imp for CAT Exam.

IMC2014

verbalexpertskagarwal

Dear Roopika, please note that ‘who’ and ‘whom’ are relative pronouns and whom is objective as it contains ‘to+who’; we can use ‘to whom’ also to specify the objective especially in passive voice. Whether who or whom, they are supposed to be placed as close to the antecedent as possible else they will turn the sentence as an example of misplaced or dangling modifier. Understand the difference.

- The soldier who was six feet tall saved the child
-The soldier whom you are going to meet today is very brave.
-The soldier to whom you were introduced yesterday is a great warrior.
-The soldier who was introduced to you yesterday is a great warrior.
Look at the difference between correct and incorrect sentences-

Incorrect- The man who they beat is in the hospital
Correct- The man whom they beat is in the Hospital
Incorrect- Whom do you think is the better player?
Correct- Who do you think is the better player?
Incorrect- Who do you think I met yesterday?
Correct- Whom do you think I met yesterday?

Which part is comes difficult .... like RC, Error correction, Sentence correction , vocabulary stated here?

Dear Subhankar,
Every part is difficult and easy altogether. It’s a subjective thought. There are aspirants who love to solve jumbled paragraphs find grammar more difficult. Those well versed with vocabulary and phrases find RC passages comparatively easy. All the parts are important and interlinked. If you have strong fundamentals, you can better understand the flow of thought in questions based on vocabulary usage, jumbled paragraphs, inferring the last sentence of a paragraph and above all RC passages. With a good vocabulary your reading speed will be increased.

RC passages play more important role in CAT as 10 questions out of 30 questions in this section are based on RC Passages. Read More..
