CAT 2014 scores will have a weightage to the tune of 40 to 50 points on a scale of 100 during the final selection round and other important factors will play a major role, so concentrate on them also

Target high but balanced percentile; 99+ OA not enough

Candidates prepare throughout the year with dedication. Some go for a drop year, some give up the job to prepare hard. They secure high overall percentile also, but a slip in sectional percentile defeats the purpose.

The calculation of percentile in CAT is different and is based on equated normalization system. A candidate with high percentile of 99 in Quant section and with low percentile of 93 in Verbal section may still score over all 99+ percentile. On the contrary a candidate with fairly high balanced percentile of 87 and 90 in each section can have overall percentile between 91-92.

The irony however, is that the candidate with overall 99 percentile with such deviation may not be shortlisted for GDPI by older IIMs unless he has a very strong academic profile and good work experience. On the other hand the candidate with 92 percentile (having balanced and fairly high percentile) with equal academic and work ex profile may get shortlisted.

The fact about CAT is that high overall percentile scorers of 97+ and 99+ in CAT 2013 didn’t receive a call from any of the older IIMs nor could they convert call from MDI, SPJIMR and other top rated B schools. On the other hand candidates with fairly good sectional percentiles and low over all percentiles of 91 and 92 not only received the calls from older IIMs but also converted them. The process in CAT 2014 is also expected to be on the same lines.

Your academic record: key factor

High scorers in CAT 2014 may get defeated, if they do not have excellent academic profile.  Your academic excellence can pull you above your peers and will be instrumental in getting you shortlisted for final admission round. IIMs award points on a scale of 100 in a range of 8 to 15 for scoring high marks in 10th, 12th and graduation. By good academics you should infer percentage of marks above 85.

Good to have work experience

If you have work experience of 2-3 years, it will add additional weightage to finalise your admission in IIMs. Know this fact that no IIM gives any weightage to the work experience of less than 1 year. Your experience period for CAT 2014 will be calculated upto July, 2014.

Give Best shot in GD-PI

After getting shortlisted for GDPI, you cannot afford scoring low in this round. The final admission round gets you a score of 30-35 points and even if you had a low percentile in CAT 2014 but have a good flair for writing, good communication skills and good knowledge about your surroundings, it can get you through and you may achieve your goal of getting an admission offer from the desired IIM for session 2015-16.
