Sahithi Avirneni scored an impressive 99.36 in CAT which is considered the country’s toughest management entrance test. She had previously been working with TCS. Sahithi is enthusiastic young girl of positive attitude and who truly believes in hardwork.

 

We interviewed her to find out about her journey so far and how she managed to fulfill her dream of getting into one of India’s premier B-Schools. Here are a few excerpts from the interview.

 

Q. What is your preparation strategy?

 

Sahithi, I identified the topics which I am strong at, which I am comfortable at and the topics where I am lagging in. I prepared a list of these and allotted my time accordingly.

 

I used to give at least one mock test every week and analysed it end to end.  Analysing tests will help you identify your weak areas, accuracy If I come across any new topics in the test, I used to note them down and practice to get comfortable with them. Practice as many models as possible.

 

Q. What was the strategy in testing room to attempt the question from different sections: Quantitative Ability & DI, Verbal Ability & LR?

 

Sahithi, For QA&DI, I followed iteration procedure. In the first iteration, glance at all the questions, answers questions which are very easy. In the second Iteration easy and medium, in the third iteration difficult and very difficult.

 

For VA&LR, there is no specific strategy I followed. After going the paper once, I would identify doable question and starts with them. For RC, after skimming through all the passages, I would decide which ones I should go with.

 

Q. Which exams did you appear? How did you prepare for them ? What score did you get?

 

Sahithi, I appeared only for CAT and I scored 99.36 .

 

Q. How many GDPI did you take part in? What were your GD topics?

 

Sahithi, I took part in 4 GDs

 

Topics were

 

1. Importance of social media

 

2. Business and ethics

 

3.  Quality of education in India

 

4.  Think befor you act

 

Q. The institutes that offered you admissions?

 

Sahithi, the colleges that offered me final admission were NITIE, MDI, IIT Bombay, XIMB, 6 new IIMs

 

 Q. Few questions that were asked to your during PI round?

 

Sahithi,Mostly I was questions asked were-

 

a) Questions on my Company (TCS)

 

b) Internship

 

c) Achievements

 

d) Current affairs

 

e) Basics of finance like monetary policies and fiscal policy.

 

Q. Which is the institute that you have decided to take admission and why? 

 

Sahithi, I joined NITIE because I’m interested in SCM and NITIE is The supply chain hub of the country. It offers niche profiles in SCM.  With my profile I felt that NITIE is the best place to go to excel in my career. Moreover it has a location advantage of being in Mumbai, the commercial capital of the country, which will provide me the much needed exposure of the business world.

 

Q. What advice and tips you would like to share with the candidates preparing for CAT 2014?

 

Sahithi, Have a clear cut strategy for your preparation. Identify your weak areas and work on them. Take as many mocks as you can and analyse them. As the pattern changed this year it is important to take mocks. And finally have a belief in you, you will flourish.

 

Q. Why did you want to do MBA?

 

Sahithi, I have acquired technical skills through my Engineering study. I strongly believe these technical skills should be supported by management education to get into a role of applying my technical skills in a more organized and efficient manner. I would get introduced to different branches of study in management. It will help me understand how to manage time and resources. Management is also one such education which I can apply in every walk of life. Moreover, I would get an opportunity to interact with the faculty and the competent peer group which would be of a great value addition to me as a person and to my career.
