Dr Debashis Chatterjee has completed his five year term as Director of IIM Kozhikode (IIMK) and has handed over the charge to Dr K Balooni, the senior most faculty of IIM Kozhikode, on September 12, 2014. During the last five years, as the Director of IIMK, Dr Chatterjee played the pivotal role in transformation of IIM Kozhikode from being an obscure small town school to an institution of national impact and global reach.

During his tenure as Director of IIM Kozhikode, Prof. Chatterjee created history by increasing the enrolment of women up to 54% in the flagship post graduate program. This change was a direct result of his innovative admissions policy that aimed at enhancing the gender diversity of the IIM classroom. IIMs are plagued with low gender diversity with just 10-15% female candidates making into the classroom.

There were several highlights of Dr Chatterjee's 5-year term as Director of IIM Kozhikode from 2009 to 2014. Key ones are:

• Corpus fund of IIMK has increased from Rs. 85.31 crores to Rs. 263 crores, i.e. more than 300% increase in revenues in last 5 years

• Tripled the enrolment of faculty in IIM Kozhikode attracting faculty of Ivy League schools across the world

• IIMK programmes received global accreditation from AMBA, UK

• Setting up the Yale University – IIM Kozhikode Centre for Excellence in Academic Leadership (CEEAL) as part of the Singh-Obama Knowledge Initiative

• Other notable achievements are creating a satellite campus for IIMK in Kochi and onsite programs in Jammu and Kashmir

In his tenure as the Director of IIMK, Dr Chatterjee has served as member of several policy making, selection committees and bodies of Government of India (including the one which has appointed the first woman to head the State Bank of India in 2013), and is widely consulted on policy issues that surround both management education and corporate management in India.

Dr Chatterjee also conducted a leadership program for the entire Kerala Cabinet, including the Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy, at IIM Kozhikode. Dr Chatterjee is also the architect of Leading Schools Workshop that has been attended by more than 11,000 school teachers and principals across India.

Known for his passion for ‘Globalizing Indian Thought’, Dr Chatterjee also pioneered setting up the first ever Indian Business Museum with contributions from top 100 Indian business houses and public Institutions such as ISRO, RBI.

According to sources, while Dr Chatterjee has received many offers to head leading institutions in India and abroad, he is like to return to IIM Lucknow, where he holds the tenure as Professor of Organizational Behaviour. Dr Chatterjee says he longs to be back to his ''original aspiration of being a worthy teacher and a good human being".
