With the second session on second day of CAT 2014 on Nov 22, 2014 getting over on time and without any technical snags, curtains on CAT 2014 testing window have gone down. Fate of 1.75 lakhs of candidates is now lying in the hands of CAT centre 2014 as the results of CAT 2014 test takers will be announced in the third week of December, 2014.

The second session of CAT 2014 on Nov 22, 2014 began at 3 PM and greeted the test takers with surprisingly easy questions in quant while DI was also not so tricky. Many candidates were able to attempt between 40 to 49 questions in this section. However, questions on Reading comprehension and Logical Reasoning were little tricky and lengthy.+

Easy Quant

Quant section was found easier than Verbal in the second session on the second day of CAT 2014. Many candidates who appeared in the second session on the second day of CAT 2014 confirmed that they could attempt 40-49 questions in Quant and DI section but could attempt only 25-30 questions in Verbal Ability and Logical reasoning section. There was no surprise element on the second day of CAT 2014.

Out of the 50 questions in the first section on Quant and DI, 34 questions on Quant appeared in CAT 2014. Prominent topics on which questions were formed were Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Number system. Questions were not difficult and could be solved if understood.

Data Interpretation: Comparatively easy

DI questions in the first section were 16 in number. There were 4 problem sets followed by 4 questions in each set. Candidates on the second day of CAT 2014 found DI questions not so tricky as they appeared on the first day of CAT 2014. One of the 4 sets was found more time consuming as it had cumbersome comparative analysis of data to arrive at the right answer option.

Verbal Ability

Second session on second day of CAT 2014 had 50 questions divided in Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension and Logical Reasoning.

In Verbal Ability area, there were 3 questions on error correction in paragraph. Again the core grammar played an important role.  The question had a paragraph, split in four sentences.  Candidates were required to pick out the sentences that were correct in terms of usage of grammar, spelling and punctuation. Those who have fair understanding of grammar usage could solve them quickly.

3 paragraphs with jumbled sentences appeared on the second day. The surprise of CAT 2012 & 2013 was also repeated and 3 questions to pick out the ‘Odd man out’ (Out of context sentence) also reappeared.  Candidates who knew the trick to find out the connectors among the sentences solved them fairly quickly

4 questions asking for the summary of short paragraphs, pick out the Inference on the paragraph also appeared in the second session on the second day of CAT 2014. The questions were not very difficult but had very close answer options.

Reading Comprehension

There were 4 Reading Comprehension passages followed by 16 questions based on them.  The 2 passages were comparatively easy, other 2 were lengthier and the questions based on them were also tricky. The passages had 5 paragraphs of 150-200 words each and as such had a length of about 800 words each. The questions were more focused on the ideas expressed in different paragraphs and on the phrases and statements given in different paragraphs.

Logical reasoning

Logical Reasoning part in Verbal Ability section had 16 questions in 4 sets.  The problem sets were tricky and lengthy to understand. One of the sets with 4 questions was even more tricky and most of the candidates didn’t attempt it to save time and utilize it on other questions.

CAT 2014 overall has been doable, easier than earlier CAT exams and most of the test takers think that a higher percentile cut off is going to greet the aspirants seeking admission in IIMs and other top rated B schools.
