As anticipated IIFT 2014 MBA(IB) entrance test for admission session 2015-16 on Nov 23, 2014, had different format with different sectional pattern. IIFT 2014 had 118 questions which were lengthier than the IIFT 2013 entrance test and the test takers found the difficulty level a bit higher than earlier exams. Data Interpretation was clubbed to Quant instead of remaining with Logical Reasoning as appeared in earlier IIFT entrance test.

IIFT entrance test was held in a single session of 2 hours across the country in the conventional paper pen mode from 10 AM to 12 Noon. The test was divided in 4 sections in a different pattern as appeared in past years. The test greeted the candidates with trickier and lengthier questions on almost all the sections. Candidates found it difficult to cross the hurdle of 50 questions out of 118. The cut off is expected between a score of 40 to 45 in IIFT 2014 out of 100.

Questions in different sections and sub sections in IIFT entrance exam carry different marking pattern. While overall maximum marks are 100, the maximum marks allotted to different questions vary from 0.5 to 1. Sectional cut offs also play an important role and a candidate has to clear them as well.

Penalty of one third marks is awarded for every wrong answer. The candidates therefore had to be careful to avoid this negative marking by choosing the answer options with well calculated thought process

The IIFT 2014 test on Nov 23, 2014 began on right time at 10 AM and got over without any technical issues.  The 120 minutes test was found more difficult and lengthy than CAT 2014 by the candidates. Most of the candidates couldn’t do more than 50% of the questions. didn’t have long queues outside the test centres although more number of candidates per centre were accommodated.

Logical Reasoning: Stood alone section

Logical Reasoning was the first section in IIFT 2014 entrance exam. There were 20 questions in LR section and every correct answer carried 1 mark, the maximum mark allotted per question. There were long problem sets and short question sets based on syllogisms, Input-output analysis. 14 questions were based on long paragraphs. Problem sets were tricky and took more time to solve them.

LR section stood alone without DI problem sets that got clubbed to Quant section in IIFT 2014.

Quant & DI: Tricky and lengthy

20 questions on Quant and 15 questions on DI problem sets carried 1 mark each making the highest scoring section. Questions on Quant were tricky and were based on varying topics of Geometry, Algebra, Arithmetic, Modern Math.

DI question sets were based on Data Table, Tabular based data, bar diagrams, pie charts. The questions were a bit tricky and lengthy as well.

The section was tricky and lengthy and it was difficult for the candidates to cross 16-18 questions out of 35 in the 2 parts of this section. Candidates can expect a cut off,  if 12-14 questions are correctly answered in this section.

General Awareness: 26 questions

There were 26 questions on current affairs, who’s who, conventional GK. Each correct answer carried the weightage of 0.5 mark. Questions as based on FIFA, Lifebuoy etc were not difficult but those who kept themselves aware about the surroundings could attempt them quickly.

Candidates had the opportunity to add 13 valuable marks if they cracked this section which didn’t need any formula based study.

Verbal Ability & RC: 37 questions

There were 4 quite lengthy Reading Comprehension passages followed by 17 questions. RC part in Verbal Ability section carried 1 mark for every correct answer. Other questions on Verbal Ability were 20 in number carrying 0.75 mark for every correct answer.

Each RC passage in IIFT 2014 had a length of about two and a half page. The length was longer than any RC passage in IIFT 2013. One of the passages was data based and appeared more like a DI passage followed by similar type of tricky questions.

20 questions on Verbal ability carrying 0.75 mark each were based on sentence rwwriting, Fill in the blanks, spelling correction, correction in paragraph sentences, Analogy, Preposition usage, Odd man out in vocabulary based questions, Formation of words, parajumbles.

A good attempt of 15-20 questions in this section could fetch a good score to clear the cut off in this section.

The expected cut off

Over all attempt with accuracy of 45-50 questions can make you clear the cut off. However since sectional cut off also applies in IIFT exam, candidates have to clear that one also in the same ratio of 45-50 percent.
