CAT Centre 2014 in its pursuit of excellence appears to be bending its back on putting all the checks and balances in processing the CAT 2014 result due to which the result date has not been declared yet. Not leaving any room for error & Omission on score normalization could be the very reason of delay in CAT 2014 result declaration.
The six sigma process in which 99.99966% accuracy is supposed to be ensured may be the reason of delay in declaration of CAT 2014 result. The aim to keep the CAT 2014 result free of any defects might be delaying the announcement of CAT 2014 result declaration date.
A week ago Dr Rohit Kapoor Faculty IIM Indore and CAT 2014 Convener said “We are in the activity of processing the results. Final checks are also underway. Request the candidates to wait for now.” All the activities are focused on score normalization process which is different in CAT 2014 than in earlier CAT exams mainly because of the fact that there should not be any mismatch and zero error result for CAT 2014 could be declared.
Candidates might remember that a few issues on score equating and normalization process came up with the declaration of CAT 2013 result and still a few legal cases are pending in the courts of Indore on this issue. CAT Centre 2014 is very much keen that no such issue should come up and create any problem to the maiden CAT 2014 undertaken by the testing agency TCS.
Award of scores: Process is complete
The scoring pattern is very clear and has not posed any problem during the calculation and tabulation process of marking in CAT 2014. Every correct answer in each of the sections has been awarded 3 marks and every wrong answer has been penalized with one third negative marks. It means if you got 4 correct answers, you have got 12 marks but if you got one wrong out of them, you have got 9-1=8 marks. Hence the process is very transparent and cannot be marred by any sort of technical problem and as such cannot be the reason of delay in declaration of CAT 2014 result.
Score Normalization: 3 main aspects to be ensured
In fact the score normalization process as declared by CAT Centre 2014 for CAT 2014 has to honour its claim on 3 aspects- Fairness, Equity and comparison of performances across the 4 test sessions in CAT 2014 exam. Not only this, but also the Normalization process has to be transparent one so that it shouldn’t be challenged by any one. Besides the process should justify the outcome and no CAT 2014 taker should suffer from it.
CAT Centre 2014 says “In order to ensure fairness and equity in comparison of performances of the candidates across different test sessions, the scores of the candidates shall be subjected to a process of Normalization. The Normalization process to be implemented shall adjust for location and scale differences of score distributions across different forms and the scaled scores obtained by this process shall be converted into percentiles for purposes of shortlisting.”
CAT 2014 result: Trying to make it perfect
CAT Centre trying to arrive at the perfection in score normalization process may be left with no option but to delay the result a bit to avoid any future embarrassment. The score normalization process which appears to be on the lines of GATE score normalization pattern is slightly different than what was adopted by CAT in earlier exams.
According to CAT Centre 2014 “The process of Normalization is an established practice for comparing candidate scores across multiple Forms and is similar to those being adopted in other large educational selection tests conducted in India such as Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).”
Expect the announcement today
On Dec 15, 2014 Dr Rohit Kapoor, CAT 2014 convener categorically stated that the result declaration date would be announced after 2 days. These 2 days were over on Dec 17 and in all probability the announcement of CAT 2014 result declaration date is expected today.
However, the CAT 2014 Result may not be declared in the 3rd week of December as it will be over in next 2 days, you may expect the CAT 2014 result to be declared in 4th week of December 2014.
