AICTE-CMAT 2015 second test for admission to PGDM/MBA programmes in 400+ B schools  is round the corner and will be held in a 4 day test window from Feb 19 to Feb 22, 2015. According to AICTE the pattern of CMAT Feb 2015 will consist of 4 sections comprising Language comprehension, Quantitative Techniques, Reasoning and General Awareness. All the sections in CMAT Feb 2015 will have 25 questions and will carry equal weightage and missing any question in any section will result in equal loss.

In all there are 100 questions divided in 25 questions for each section and carrying 4 marks per question.  The score is awarded in raw form and if you are able to score around 250+ you may get a good B school.

Time to revise: Assess your prep in Language comprehension

Prof S K Agarwal, Verbal Ability expert suggests a strong preparation of topics on Language comprehension. CMAT aspirants may confront various types of questions on Language comprehension. If they have a good grasp on fundamentals choosing the right answer option, scoring high wouldn’t be a great problem.

Revise the parts of speech & usage of tenses

Make sure that usage of Articles, Non-finites, dangling modifiers, Nouns, Pronouns (Especially relative Pronouns), adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, spellings of the words, usage of punctuation, verbs, Syntax, Subject-verb Agreement, Simple, continuous, Perfect tenses and Conditional-unreal past have been properly understood and practiced.  Your study material related to the preparation to CMAT should have all the good volume of exercises on these topics. Now go for revision and practice to avoid the avoidable errors.

If you find that time is short – go for more and more exercises related to above topics-this will create interest and you will get more expertise

Practice Vocabulary daily

If the stock is above 2000 words, you may go on revising them. If not, find out the ways and means to build the stock. You may go for Flash Cards for synonyms-antonyms, exercises on one words substitution, Phrasal Verbs, Idioms.  Practice as much as possible Please remember every word has a specific use, while using the vocabulary words always try to place right word for right use.

It is no use starting to learn any new and unfamiliar concept which might give you trouble. Apart from going for more and more exercises on error corrections and vocabulary usage, begin attempting more Mocks and Jumbled paragraphs along with word expressions. Reading comprehension passages, at least two a day should be solved.  Difficult words in them must be understood and should be put to correct usage

Focus more on Practice of fundamentals, vocabulary, parajumbles. Devote more time to  Reading comprehension passages. Mocks should be focussed. Queries must be sorted out – from books, Mentor or whatever source is available. No more new concepts but mocks and exercises should be at the core of the study schedule

General Awareness

25 questions on General Awareness in CMAT carry equal weightage and should be taken as seriously as other sections. Next 5 days can be devoted to regular updating of General Knowledge in Business and Finance, Past related to present, Recent changes –National and international events.

While preparing you could further divide General Knowledge in three parts i) Conventional -available in books  ii) Current- based on current reading of newspapers and periodicals  iii) Business.   Please remember current GK-whether Business, national and international has an on-going preparation method and you have to go for thorough reading of the newspaper, note down the important events and relate them to something in your memory so that you may remember it.  The conventional General Knowledge – if already prepared, must be revised regularly because no event in future might co-relate it. Revision will help.

Revise the learnt GK till the exam day instead of mugging up new current affairs 10 days before the test. Since the examination paper must have been prepared by now, you may not go for any new GK learning, however, conventional General Knowledge must be refreshed.

Quantitative Techniques

Majority number of questions among 25 quant questions are expected from number system, time speed distance, geometry, permutation combination and probability. We can also expect questions from indices surds, logs, progression, averages and profit loss. Candidates have to see whether all the topics are well prepared. Do not begin any new and difficult topic, which may consume more of time.

Practice well on Reasoning

Reasoning questions are based on human instinct. It’s better to prepare on different topics of Logical Reasoning as topics are important and questions can be based on any of them. More practice topics on LR are seating arrangements; sets, blood relations, direction, assumption, premise –conclusion, team formation. The concept to them can be well understood fast.  Please practice as many questions as you can every day.  Analogy, sets should be simultaneously practiced. It should continue till the last day before the examination.

Practice to manage time

The Time management for various sections should be judiciously carved out of the study schedule. It could be learning parallel to revising the learnt topics. We can divide the time management strategy among Language Comprehension, General Knowledge, Quantitative Aptitude, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning.  Now the aspirant has to cover all the subjects since the questions based on each of them carry equal marks. The weightage on any question is not less than the other one.

The next 10 days should be devoted to –learning- revision-practice. Find out your weak areas among strong ones and strong areas among weak ones. Improve your weak areas while you need to further strengthen your strong areas.
