DTE) Maharashtra has placed the candidates scoring 165 marks at a lower percentile than the candidate scoring 155 marks
With the formula adopted now, Rohan with 155 marks emerges the topper in MAH CET 2015 with 99.993 percentile leaving behind Siddharth with 165 marks with 99.966 percentile

With the declaration of adopted process in calculation of equated scores in MAH CET 2015 result Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) Maharashtra has placed the candidates scoring 165 marks at a lower percentile than the candidate scoring 155 marks. With the formula adopted now, Rohan with 155 marks emerges the topper in MAH CET 2015 with 99.993 percentile leaving behind Siddharth with 165 marks with 99.966 percentile. The anomaly can enable Rohan to get into JBIMS but other candidates with same scores may not be so lucky to get JBIMS.

Scoring of higher percentile at lower marks has happened across the 4 sessions of MAH CET 2015 and many candidates might feel lucky enough if they didn’t even try to attempt the questions not evaluated by DTE Maharashtra. MBAUniverse.com has already shared that 59 questions out of total 800 questions in MAH CET 2015 have not been given any weightage and as such have not been evaluated.

Equi Percentile: Game changer

The equi-percentile and calculation of equated scoring process has now placed Shah Siddharth Minex with 165 marks at a percentile of 99.966; Kokane Karan Rajeev with 163 marks at 99.993; Jose Augusto De Abreu with 160 marks at 99.993 and above all Rohan Vittal Nadkarni with 155 marks at 99.993. Goving by the above award of percentile pattern Rohan  with 155 actual marks but higher percentile sure stands a better chance and can hope for the admission in JBIMS Mumbai  based on his percentile than Siddharth with 165 marks but lower percentile.

How the anomaly happened

MAH CET 2015 examination was conducted in multiple sessions, the question papers were different for each session and therefore the marks scoring pattern depended upon the difficulty level and it varied from session to session.  Apart from technical glitches all the 4 sessions of MAH CET 2015 had wrong questions which have not been evaluated by DTE Maharashtra. There was varying number of such questions qualifying for no evaluation in each session. According to DTE Maharashtra there were 59 questions in all which have not been evaluated.  Due to this variation, DTE has normalized the score using Equi- percentile Method to take care of the difference in difficulty level, so that no candidate feels he/she is at a loss because he/she attempted a session which had tougher set of questions.

Day 1 Session 2: Base of scoring

Percentile scale of Batch II has been taken as the basis for equi-percentile method as maximum number of 14817 candidates appeared for this batch. The equated score for the percentile that are not present in the percentile of Batch II has been calculated by interpolation. Rest of the batches had less candidates in each session.

According to DTE Maharashtra “Batch II percentile scale is considered as Reference, as the number of students appeared is more.” DTE has also shared how the scores are equated across the sessions. It can be understood by following to take the percentile of any batch other than Batch II; locate the percentile in the Batch II percentile scale to map. If it does not map follow the interpolation method and find out the corresponding marks. The values of percentiles are arranged in the descending order irrespective of the score obtained.  DTE says that the values of percentiles are the same as in their respective batches.

Variation in maximum marks

If number of questions evaluated for the particular session were more after accounting for the wrong questions, candidates despite scoring more marks were awarded lower percentile and if number of questions evaluated were less candidates despite scoring less marks were awarded higher percentile since the marks were awarded out of more/less maximum marks as the case may be.

Changed Scenario: Who can get JBIMS

With the varying percentile scoring at varying marks in each session of MAH CET 2015, candidates who have already applied to JBIMS, Mumbai and with intention to explore admission opportunity in this highly ranked  B school should keep in mind following key facts.

A candidate with 160 marks in first session on March 14, 2015 must not compare and rate him at par with a candidate in second session on March 15, 2015 scoring 160. The latter one with this score has been awarded percentile as high as 99.99 as against the percentile of 99.74 awarded with same score for the first day first session. In fact the candidate scoring 160 in first session on March 14, 2015 has more than 25 candidates placed in hierarchy above him.

According to DTE Maharashtra  “As the merit list will be based on the percentile, the selection of Batch I or Batch II or Batch III or Batch IV as reference, will not affect the percentile of the candidate. In case of equal percentile the inter-se-merit criteria given in the information brochure shall be applied at the time of preparation of merit list for admission.”

Besides JBIMS, although will accept MAH CET 2015 scores but it will not participate in Centralized Admission Process (CAP) to be conducted by DTE Maharashtra. Only those candidates who have already applied for admission to JBIMS, Mumbai and have scored high in CAT 2014 or MAH CET 2015 can hope to be shortlisted for GD/PI round at JBIMS to be held separately.
