Turn entrepreneur to serve society says Narayana Murthy at interactive session in Delhi School of Business

Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan awardee by Government of India, N R Narayan Murthy, co-founder of Infosys and a living legend called upon the youth to turn to innovation and research for finding solutions to problems for enhancing quality of life and benefitting the people at an interactive session at Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies (VIPS) and Delhi School of Business (DSB) in Pitampura, New Delhi.

Delhi School of Business (DSB), one of the reputed B schools in New Delhi organized an interactive session of faculty and students with Shri N R Narayan Murthy at its campus in the forenoon on May 20, 2015 to enable the students get inspiration to become young entrepreneurs in the era of ‘Make in India’.
 
Mr Murthy, known as the pioneer of IT and software industry, said that the objective of education is to make the students learn the process of learning, and develop in them the vision to deliver to the society. He added that simply training the students for skill development will not help.

“I wanted to remove poverty by creating more jobs”, said Mr. N.R. Narayana Murthy while discussing with the students and the faculty about his motivation for becoming an entrepreneur. He asked the students to become entrepreneurs and create jobs for scores of educated youth of the country. Referring to the success of Indian software industry, he said, we must try to leverage on our strength in this competitive world.

Answering to a question about the ethical and legal aspects of the working of entrepreneurs, he said that one Satyam scam cannot make the practices of the whole sector invalid. He added that such incidents help us to think about introducing more checks and balances in our system.

Talking further about the conflict between ethics and profit, he said that the guiding thought for an entrepreneur should be to generate respect through his actions. 

Responding to the issue of carbon neutrality, Mr Murthy highlighted the need of an initiative by corporations to recycle the resources used by them. He guided the students about the importance of good ideas, values, communication skills and leadership quality in establishing a successful ventures.

After the interactive session, Shri Murthy visited a photo exhibition wherein the photographs taken by the journalism students of VIPS had been put on display.
 
The session started with a welcome address by Prof.  I.M.Pande, DG, VIPS. Dr S C Vats, Chairman of VIPS, proposed the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to Mr Murthy for igniting the young mind and motivating them for a great cause.  
 
N R Narayan Murthy: The living legend

Padma Vibhushan Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy commonly referred to as Narayana Murthy, is an IT industrialist and co-founder of Infosys. Shri Murthy graduated in Electrical Engineering from National Institute of Engineering in 1967 and did masters in 1969 from IIT Kanpur

In 1981, Narayana Murthy founded Infosys, a global software consulting company headquartered in Bangalore  Before starting Infosys, Murthy worked with IIM Ahmedabad as chief systems programmer and Patni Computer Systems in Pune (Maharashtra). He served as Infosys CEO from 1981 to 2002 and as chairman from 2002 to 2011. Under his leadership, Infosys was listed on NASDAQ in 1999

Murthy has been listed among the 12 greatest entrepreneurs of our time by Fortune magazine. He has been described as Father of Indian IT sector by Time magazine due to his contribution to outsourcing in India.
Mr. Murthy articulated, designed, and implemented the Global Delivery Model, which has become the foundation for the huge success of the IT services outsourcing industry in India. He has led key corporate governance initiatives in India. He is an IT advisor to several Asian countries.

He serves on the boards of Ford Foundation, United Nations Foundation, Rhodes Trust and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. He has served as a member of the HSBC board and the Unilever board. He has served on the boards of Cornell University, Wharton School, and the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. He has also served as the Chairman of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

Mr. Murthy was ranked among the top 10 of Financial Times list of ’Business Pioneers in Technology’, published in March 2015. In 2014, he was ranked 13th among CNBC’s 25 global business leaders who have made the maximum impact on society during the last 25 years. The Economist ranked him among the 10 most admired global business leaders in 2005. He has been awarded the Legion d’honneur by the Government of France, the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and Padma Shri and the Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India.
