IIM Nagpur declares admission result; PI not a part of final selection; 1857 seeking admission to 60 seats

Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur is the only IIM out of the proposed 6 new IIMs that has not only launched its website but has also placed the admission offer list for the maiden PGP batch 2015-17.  IIM Ahmedabad (IIMA) the mentor institute of IIM Nagpur asked CAT 2014 takers who had applied to PGP at the proposed "IIM in Maharashtra" at the time of CAT 2014 registration and meet IIM Nagpur's admission criteria to confirm their interest for admission to PGP at IIM Nagpur by May 31, 2015.

IIM Nagpur Admission offer list declared

IIM Nagpur has placed on its site the provisional admission offer list for the first PGP batch 2015-17 alongwith the waiting list. Sharing the achievement, IIM Ahmedabad faculty on Organizational Behaviour  and in-charge of IIM Nagpur cell, Prof Pradyumana W Khokle says “An offer list with names of short-listed candidates to whom we have made offers via emails on Saturday and a waiting list has been put up on the IIM-N website.”  Prof Khokle is a B.Tech (IIT, Kanpur) and is Fellow (IIM, Ahmedabad).  His current interest areas for research are leadership, management of organizational transformations, and use of "e-learning" based pedagogies for management education. All would help IIM Nagpur students to learn more.

CAT 2014 taker with 226.45 score at IIM Nagpur

Amongst those who confirmed their interest in PGP at IIM Nagpur, the candidate with maximum CAT 2014 total score stands at 226.45. The transparency adopted by IIM Ahmedabad in regard to admission criteria at IIM Nagpur for the first PGP batch 2015-17 would become the role model for other proposed 5 new IIMs who are yet to launch their websites and finalise the admission process.

Admission process on; 4 rounds of offers

IIM Nagpur has announced the admission status and the schedule for final admission result announcement for all the candidates. The first announcement of admission offer and subsequent waiting list at IIM Nagpur has been made available on June 6, 2015. There will be 3 more such announcements on June 16, June 22 and June 29, 2015.

The candidates who have been offered provisional admission at IIM Nagpur on June 6, 2015 shall have to confirm the acceptance through website by June 14, 2015 and will have to submit the hard copy of acceptance letter and demand draft for commitment fee so as to reach at IIM Nagpur by June 19, 2015.

IIM Nagpur further declares that the commitment fee wouldn’t exceed Rs.50,000/- and the amount  will be balanced against payment of tuition fees in the future.

IIM Nagpur: Selection criteria

According to IIM Nagpur, ‘CAT-2014 score is the single criterion used as the basis for arriving at the first short-list’. The minimum CAT 2014 percentile that has made the CAT 2014 taker eligible for shortlisting is 80 percentile in each of the 2 sections and for overall percentile it is 96.3.

Each IIM shortlists candidates for second stage of selection which may be independent of each other. The final admission round at IIM Nagpur for the first PGP batch 2015-17 does not include PI round. It includes Past Academic Performance and work experience apart from the CAT 2014 scores. According to Prof Pradyumana “While the Personal Interview (PI) is not a component or part of the selection of candidate, the past academic performance (PAP), work experience (WE) and performance in CAT will be taken into account.”

Past Academic Performance (PAP)

Applicants’ academic performance (marks obtained) in 10th Standard Examination, 12th Standard Examination and Bachelor’s Degree Examination will be taken into account.  The eligible applicants will be assigned rating scores ‘A’ and ‘B’ based on their percentage of marks obtained in 10th and 12th standard examinations respectively. Top rating score 10 will be assigned to the candidates with 90+ marks in class 10th  and class 12th.

For Bachelor’s Degree eligible applicants will be assigned a rating score ‘C’ based on the percentage of marks received in the Bachelor’s degree. The candidates with 75+ marks shall be awarded rating score 10 in bachelor’s examination.

The formula adopted by IIM Nagpur in award of PAP Score is PAP = (0.25*A+0.35*B+0.40*C)/10.

Work Experience (WE)

For the work experience of completed months x, the candidates will be assigned a WE score using the following formula: WE = 0 for x <= 6; WE = 0 for x > 72; WE = x/36 for 6 < x <= 36;  WE = 1 – ((x-36)/36) for 36 < x <= 72

Accordingly IIM Nagpur does not propose to award any score for work experience of less than 6 months and for more than 72 months.

The Final Selection

Final Selection at IIM Nagpur will be based on the ranks of the candidates computed separately for each category (General/SC/ST/NC-OBC/DAP) on the basis of their Final Scores (FS). The numbers selected in different categories will be in proportions mandated by the law.

The Lucky first PGP batch of IIM Nagpur

Students of first few PGP batches at IIM Nagpur will learn from IIMA faculty. IIM Ahmedabad will mentor all activities at IIM Nagpur till it moves to its permanent campus (about 3 years later), or IIM Nagpur is able to handle these activities entirely on its own, whichever is earlier. Since recruiting full-time faculty is a fairly long process, during the mentorship period and while IIM Nagpur's own faculty are recruited, faculty members from IIM Ahmedabad will be delivering courses at IIM Nagpur.

This may include a few visiting faculty selected by IIM Ahmedabad to meet their exacting standards. The overall design, quality and delivery of PGP will be to the standards and with direct involvement of IIM Ahmeadabad. Candidates going to join IIM Nagpur should expect to see some of the best faculty members in the country today.

The PGP 2015-17 course fee at IIM Nagpur would be Rs 10 lakhs payable in instalments. IIM Nagpur will be temporarily located within the campus of VNIT, Nagpur till it moves to its own campus (of approx 200 acres) in about 3 years time
