HKUST MBA offers the unique 2 year MBA program in just 16 months which is designed for students who look for a career switch, or maximizing international exposure

Since 2010 to 2015, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) MBA programme has continued being ranked among the Top 15 MBA programmes in the world by the Financial Times Ranking. HKUST MBA is the first Asian MBA programme listed in all major MBA rankings namely The Economist, Financial Times, Bloomberg Businessweek and Forbes. HKUST is also the first business school in Asia to have dual accreditation by AACSB and EQUIS.  Admission to HKUST MBA 2015 programme is closed and for MBA 2016 would begin in the month of September 2015.

To help HKUST MBA aspirants learn more about the programme, HKUST has organized an admission event in the form of a campus visit program on June 5, 2015. The small scale activity at HKUST is organized through out the year to spread knowledge and awareness about HKUST MBA programme. The visit on June 5 would include a lunch with HKUST student ambassador(s) and a campus tour. The event aims to experience the life at HKUST Business school.

HKUST offers exchange programmes with almost 60 business schools in 19 countries including America, Australia and Europe.

HKUST MBA

The HKUST MBA offers the unique 2 year MBA program in just 16 months which is designed for students who look for a career switch, or maximizing international exposure and acquiring solid knowledge of Asia and China. This is also ideal for candidates looking for job opportunities in Asia post MBA.  It includes an optional internship in the summer and an overseas exchange opportunity for one semester. 

For candidates who cannot stay away from a job for too long, HKUST offers the program in an accelerated 12 months period. It is ideal for candidates with rich professional experience or planning for a career in senior management roles. Such candidates are often sponsored by the company.

Curriculum

The HKUST MBA curriculum is composed of 52 credits, with around 60% gained through studying required core courses and the remaining 40% through elective courses. The core courses of HKUST MBA are designed in 3 tiers—foundation, functional, and integration. These layers provide the fundamental knowledge and basics prior to studying the electives. Some core courses include Preparing to Lead, Data Analysis, Corporate Finance, Management of Organizations, Doing Business in China, Strategic Management among others.

Students can choose from over 70 electives which are provided along 5 career tracks to suit individual career needs. The major career tracks are General Management in China, Finance, Consulting and Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship and Family Business and Marketing.

Mandarin language course is offered to newly admitted MBA students free of charge to help the candidates exploring career opportunities in mainland China or China related enterprises in Hong Kong or elsewhere.

HKUST: Admission Requirements and Deadlines

Regarding the intake and admission application process, HKUST saysWe have one intake of full-time MBA every year. Program orientation and a residential program for all incoming students start in early-August each year. Candidates should start their applications around September every year for the next year’s intake”

In order to apply to the HKUST MBA, candidates must have

• a bachelor’s degree with strong academic records

• a competitive GMAT score

• a minimum 2 years full time work experience

• A good TOEFL/IELTS score if English was not the language of instruction at the undergraduate or post graduate level

Application deadlines for 2015 intake is closed and were as follows

Phase 1: Nov 13, 2014;

Phase 2: Jan 13, 2015;

Phase 3: Mar 13, 2015

Evaluation Criteria at HKUST

HKUST seeks candidates with outstanding records in academics and professional experience. Candidates must have the capacity to make long lasting contribution to the society, the region and industry they are working. Career goals are important criteria at HKUST hence applicants must have aligned strong career goals that match the program offered by HKUST.

The intake size at HKUST Business schools is 100-120 students, split into two classes of 50-60. Class 2014 profile is shared below

Fees and Scholarships

The total program fee for the full-time MBA program at HKUST is HK$545,000 (equivalent to US$69,900) or approx INR45 lacs for the 2015 intake.

HKUST offers a number of scholarships to candidates from different nationalities and background. The HKUST MBA Merit Scholarship is offered to top admitted candidates irrespective of citizenship. The awards are granted on the basis of merit.  Various banks in India and Credila offer education loan to applicants from India.

Career prospects

HKUST Career report of 2014 shows that 73% switched to job functions after MBA, 65% switched  industries and 80% work in Asia after MBA. Highest number of post MBA function was in Finance (32%). The mean annual salary of HKUST MBA graduates of 2014 was USD86, 000. Top recruiters included HSBC, Accenture, PwC Consulting, Burberry, Apple among others.
