The Chief Khalsa Diwan (CKD) has offered to provide 32 Air conditioned rooms with twin sharing accommodation facility to the prospective students of IIM Amritsar as the IIM’s earlier selected hostel building has developed technical snags.

IIM Amritsar is all set to begin the classes for the maiden PGP batch 2015-17 in July 2015 with an intake of higher number of candidates than proposed earlier. Suitable hostel accommodation being the priority to accommodate prospective students, the building offered by Amritsar Improvement Trust was earlier finalized for hostel accommodation at IIM Amritsar. As is the trend all over the country, Government agencies are seldom serious on maintaining their buildings, the building of Amritsar Improvement Trust (Amritsar Development Authority now) has developed technical problems as its lift has stopped functioning.

Not banking upon the hopes and expectations from Amritsar Development Authority of putting everything in order by the time IIM Amritsar begins its session in July, 2015, the high profile team of the MHRD has preferred the Chief Khalsa Diwan’s (CKD) newly constructed Sri Guru Amardas Old Age Home to the Old building of Amritsar Improvement Trust for hostel accmodation.

MHRD officials visited the campus selected for IIM Amritsar and its hostel building to oversee the arrangements being made to start the maiden academic session of IIM Amritsar in July 2015. The team was worried about the problems in the hostel building and was on the lookout for the alternate better options.   The voluntary offer from Chief Khalsa Diwan (CKD) to provide hostel accommodation in their newly constructed building came as a great relief to MHRD as hardly 20-25 days are left to commence IIM Amritsar operation.

Although Amritsar Development Authority has floated e-tenders worth Rs 2 lakh for the job and is hopeful to get it in perfect order by July 4, 2015, any delay could create the accommodation problem for the students who will come from all over the country.

The CKD building is located just 4 kms from the proposed campus at IIM Amritsar at Punjab Institute of Technology from where the IIM would begin operations. Sharing his concern and long struggle to get a prestigious institute like IIM in Amritsar, Shri Charanjit Singh Chadha, CKD president said “Our building has 54 fully furnished, spacious and airy AC rooms, at present, we have spared 32 rooms for IIM students. Each room has two beds with attached bathrooms. There are elevators, a reception-cum-office, an ultramodern kitchen, a living hall and dining hall in the basement. The building is surrounded by a beautiful garden and there is a special arrangement for security”.

In his view The Chief Khalsa Diwan (CKD) will make all out efforts not to let the prestigious B-school go or delay commencement of academic session that could affect the future of many students adversely. In fact CKD would be more than pleased to offer any assistance required in the smooth housing and operation of IIM Amritsar.

IIM Amritsar proposes to offer admission to 65 students in the first PGP batch 2015-17 instead of 140 as proposed in the Cabinet meeting held on June 24, 2015 and presided by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

The classes for the first PGP batch 2015-17 at IIM Amritsar are to be conducted at the transit campus located inside the Punjab Institute of Technology, Government Polytechnic Compound close to Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), till its own infrastructure and campus is setup and ready for use. The facilities at the academic campus include classrooms, recreational space, activity rooms, library, computer and sports facilities.
