NMAT by GMAC 2016: know what has changed in the exam pattern

Subsequent to its ownership having been taken over by GMAC, it is not only the name of NMAT that stands changed as NMAT by GMAC but the exam also has brought with it number of user friendly changes to smoothen the test taking process. NMAT by GMAC will the first exam after transfer of ownership of NMAT to GMAC and as such without changing the ingredients of the test NMAT 2016 will be an exam with a user friendly difference.

First of all an NMAT by GMAC 2016 aspirant should be aware that NMAT 2016 (Now NMAT by GMAC) will have a 75 days testing window beginning October 6 and closing on December 19, 2015. The exam is mandatory entrance test for admission to various MBA/PGDM programmes 2016-18 batch not only to SVKM's Narsee Monjee Institute Of Management Studies (NMIMS School Of Business Management) but to 11 other universities and B schools.

NMAT by GMAC 2016 is going to offer 3 attempts to the candidates to maximise their scores in the prestigious entrance test.

The registration for NMAT 2015 (Now, NMAT by GMAC) was opened on July 2, 2015 and will close on October 5, 2015. Approximately 70000 aspirants are expected to appear in computer based NMAT by GMAC. Following are the key aspirant friendly changes in the NMAT by GMAC 2016 exam that favour the test takers and provide an opportunity to maximise the scores in the exam.

Computer delivered randomly generated test
The NMAT by GMAC 2016 will be a computer-delivered exam. The exam will give each candidate a randomly generated test from a pool of questions, delivered one-at-a-time. The number of questions, difficulty levels, and the time limit for each of the sections in NMAT 2016 is predetermined and, under normal administration conditions, will be the same regardless of when and where the test is administered. Candidates have a choice of selecting the order/sequence of the test sections.

3 Individually timed sections
The NMAT 2016 will have 3 sections – Language Skills, Quantitative Skills and Logical Reasoning. All these 3 sections of NMAT 2016 will be individually timed. Test takers must answer questions and review answers of each section within the allotted time. Test takers are supposed to review their answers before moving to another section of the exam, as once the candidate closes out of a section, all answers are final.

Sectional weightage
NMAT 2016 test takers will be allowed select the order of the sections to attempt the exam in accordance with their preference. There will be sectional as well as overall cut offs in NMAT by GMAC 2016. The necessity is to perform well relative to other candidates in each of the 3 sections to get shortlisted for final admission.

NMAT 2016 would have 120 questions to be solved in 2 hours (120 minutes). No descriptive type of questions would be asked in NMAT by GMAC 2016.

No negative marking proposed
The good news for NMAT 2016 takers is that there would be no negative marking in the exam. In fact sometimes candidates are just not sure of the right answer on the test and are running out of time. Now the candidates can make an informed guess instead of skipping a question without the fear of a penalty for a wrong answer.

Facility to review answers
NMAT 2016 takers can review answers at the end of each section so that they have the opportunity to revise if they are not sure of the original response.

3 retakes allowed
If an NMAT by GMAC 2016 aspirant is not satisfied with his performance and thinks that he/she can improve the scores by taking NMAT 2016 again, the test can be rescheduled for ‘Retake’ but with a minimum gap of 15 days.

The scheduling to retake the NMAT 2016 begins on October 6, 2015 and will continue till December 18, 2015.  Candidates have an option of retaking NMAT by GMAC up to 3 maximum attempts, including “no shows” in NMAT 2015. It implies that ‘No shows’ will be considered as attempts. Once your registration for the retake is complete you will receive an email with authorization to schedule the retake for NMAT by GMAC.

You can schedule the retake test on a date 15 or more days after the most recent date of attempt. This means you will have to wait at least 15 calendar days before you can appear for a retake attempt in NMAT by GMAC 2016. You can schedule your test any time during the retake scheduling window (subject to real time availability). You will be able to select any slot that is a minimum of 24 hours later than the time you carry out the scheduling transaction.

It is important to note that the registration for NMAT 2015 (Now NMAT by GMAC) should be finalised during the registration window open from October 5, 2015 to become eligible for the retake exam.

Self-scheduling in NMAT 2016
Candidates can choose the test appointment date, time and location in real-time based on the availability of seats at each test centre. There will be 27 conveniently located testing centres to choose from for the NMAT 2016 exam.

Facility to send scores to 7 programmes for free
Candidates can choose to select the list of programmes they want to send their scores to before or after taking the exam. Up to 7 programmes are included in the registration fee. However, candidates will be able to send their scores to more than 7 programmes before or after they register for a nominal additional fee.

Review your result; apply later
NMAT 2016 (NMAT b y GMAC) takers will have the facility to view the results and then decide to apply to business school or retake the test depending on their comfort with the results they have obtained.

Availability of Exam prep material
GMAC is working to introduce the NMAT prep material for the benefit of the candidates sometime in August 2015. This will reduce the anxiety of the candidates on the structure of the exam, content and the types of questions and help candidates to familiarize themselves with the NMAT exam.
