Lok Sabha Speaker and Member of parliament Sumitra Mahajan suggests to take support of IIMs, IITs and other top rated institutes in planning of much talked about ‘Smart City’ project. While presiding over a meeting of high level officials and public representatives in Indore on September 16, she shared her views that with the support of these highly respected and well skilled institutions, India could have well planned ‘Smart City’ and ‘Light Metro’.

Instead of going by some haphazard planning resulting in erroneous implementation, it would be in the fitness of things ‘to be very careful during planning of these projects’ she highlighted.

Indore is one of the cities going to be on the map of smart cities and equipped with light Metro. The city plans to spend around Rs.26000 crore on Light Metro to cover a distance of 94.62 Kms.

With the involvement of skills from top rated institutions like IIMs in planning the mega projects, the end result would  be better with more innovations in planning and better design on which execution could also be good.

In fact  many other mega projects related to development like urban mobility plan, sewerage system and drinking water supply, environment of the city are to be properly planned and were discussed in the meeting as they will be part of the smart city project. A good planning with high technical and managerial skills from IITs and IIMs will sure yield the desired result in making the chosen  city as Smart City.

The light metro project which was scheduled to take off by the end of 2018 is still  held up probably due to not a very good planning and the pending problems like availability of land and routes of metro still stand unresolved.

Emphasising to focus on every minute detail before planning the project the Lok Sabha Speaker was of the view to seek the support and include the top level Indian Management skills from IIMs  in finalizing the plan. She suggested to seek public opinion and then to incorporate the received suggestions in planning of Smart City  projects.
