NTU Singapore to invest $75 million on innovative pedagogy; launches $45million new age university building-The Hive

NTU has launched its new age University Building-Hive and is all set to invest $75 million on its innovative learning by introducing smart class rooms

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore which has recently moved up to 13th rank among top Universities of the world in Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) annual  World University Rankings and has been ranked 2nd best in the Asian University Rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released on September 15, 2015, is all set to invest $75 million on its innovative learning by introducing smart class rooms. A team based learning will now be reflected instead of conventional class room types at NTU Singapore.

Mr Ong Ye Kung, Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills). Singapore officially inaugurated ‘Hive’ the new-age university building constructed at a cost of $45million  at NTU Singapore campus on October 20, 2015 kick starting the pedagogy with the vision on future. The building is an architectural marvel and is designed to enhance learning and interaction in student community. With this new launch, NTU students will now be able to have access to contents of the course on their own before going to class rooms and the time in class rooms will be utilized with professors on team-based learning.

Hive – the new learning hub has 56 curvilinear smart classrooms instead of conventional class rooms. These new class rooms are equipped with the latest technologies.  Students can attend talks, workshops, debates, film screenings and performances at The Hive through the academic year. The library at Hive has rich collection of 11000 videos and 1200 books at present. The volume is proposed to go up beyond 5000 books in future.

It took about 3 years to complete The Hive. All the 56 smart class rooms at Hive are equipped with flexible clustered seating, electronic whiteboards, multiple LCD screens and wireless communication tools.  According to NTU another such learning hub with yet smarter classrooms is also getting ready and will be available for use in 2017.

Sharing the advancement in learning process on the occasion of launch of Hive, Professor Bertil Andersson,  President, NTU said: "In education, we are going from Gutenberg to Google and the next-generation professor is Professor iPad or Professor Smartphone. Digital devices and online media have changed the way the young acquire knowledge.”  According to him Hive will reinvent the learning experience and also create a unique social space for students from all disciplines to interact.

150 courses in the first of year of launch of new pedagogy are proposed to be converted by NTU. 33% target of the conversion has already been completed. NTU envisions to convert all the 1500 courses in next 5 years with the use of this advanced and innovative learning process.

There was a great gathering present on the occasion of inauguration and prominent among them were Mr Ong Ye Kung, Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) Singapore; Professor Bertil Andersson, President NTU;  Mr S. Chandra Das, NTU Pro-Chancellor; Professor Freddy Boey, Provost NTU; Thomas Heatherwick, Designer of The Hive and Professor Kam Chan Hin, Senior Associate Provost (Undergraduate Education).

MBA session at NTU-Nanyang Business School, Singapore begins in the month of August. For MBA admission in 2015 application process was closed on May 31, 2015 and for the admission 2016 the first round deadline by Nanyang has been fixed as December 31, 2015.  Students seeking admission to MBA 2016 at Nanyang Business school of NTU can apply online, provided they fulfil the eligibility criteria.
