MBAUniverse.com:What was your preparation strategy? Share some key do’s and don’ts
Vedant (CAT topper): I had joined mock test series and I used to prepare for it. While solving questions, I always gave more preference to accuracy and after the formal announcement of new test pattern, I used to dedicate 2 hours daily for improving the speed.

MBAUniverse.com: What was your strategy in testing room to attempt the questions from different sections: Quantitative Ability & DI, Verbal Ability & LR?
Vedant (CAT topper): I am comparatively better at quant & DI than VA & LR, so gave 90 minutes to QA section and tried to solve as many questions as possible. Hence I started with quant first and after 90 minutes I switched to VA & LR section. In this section, I did LR questions first and I gave more priority to accuracy.

MBAUniverse.com: Which all exams did you write? How did you prepare for them? What score did you get?
Vedant (CAT topper): I appeared for CAT-2014 and I got 99.28 percentile in it. Apart from this, I also appeared for MAH-CET in which I secured 99.06 percentile.

MBAUniverse.com: How many GDPI did you take part in? What were your GD/WAT topics?
Vedant (CAT topper): For the preparation of personal assessment rounds, I used to attend mock Interviews.  I didn’t attend any GD round. During these sessions, I also practiced for WAT.

MBAUniverse.com: Few questions that were asked to you during PI round?
Vedant (CAT topper):

New IIMs interview:

  • Comparison of performance of different PMs (Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, P V Narasimha Rao, Narendra Modi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee) of India.
  • Most efficient algorithm to find if a number is prime or not
  • What is Social Forestry?

FMS interview:

  • I was asked some questions based on financial ratios and why MBA
  • Extempore topic: Modi's charisma
  • Analysis of general election 2014: Anti-incumbency, corruption, Modi wave, caste-politics etc.

MBAUniverse.com: The institutes that offered you admission?
Vedant (CAT topper): I was offered admission by all of the 6 new IIMs.

MBAUniverse.com: Why did you decide in favour of IIM Ranchi only?
Vedant (CAT topper): I have joined IIM Ranchi because it is known as the Finance Campus among the new IIMs. Also IIMC being the mentor of IIMR, has provided much needed support and guidance for establishing IIMR. In a very short duration of time, IIM Ranchi has made it to the prestigious league of B-schools. Taking all these factors into account, I have decided to join IIM Ranchi.

MBAUniverse.com: Why did you want to do MBA?
Vedant (CAT topper): I was working with Deloitte USI Consulting which is an IT Consultancy. But I have an interest in finance, especially in Investment Banking. The job with Deloitte didn’t offer any such opportunity. Also an MBA degree will offer me a much-needed push in the career and it will increase my employability prospects.

MBAUniverse.com: What advice and tips you would like to share with the candidates preparing for CAT 2015?
Vedant (CAT topper): I read in the news that the pattern of the test has changed this year. So adapt yourself to the new pattern and prepare by joining a test series. It gives you a fair bit of idea to strategize for CAT.

MBAUniverse.com:  Your message to future MBA aspirants
Vedant (CAT topper): All the best! Give your best shot at CAT 2015 and remember CAT is not the end, it is just the beginning.
