12 new IIMs propose to shortlist around 18000 candidates for admission to their PGP 2016-18 batch with the same shortlisting parameters comprising overall and sectional minimum percentile scored in CAT 2015
Effectively there could be hardly 8000 to 9000 candidates who are distinct from other ones when the shortlists by these IIMs are announced

With the sole decisive criterion of CAT 2015 percentile score to announce the shortlist for PI-WAT round, the 12 new IIMs propose to shortlist around 18000 candidates for admission to their PGP 2016-18 batch with the same shortlisting parameters comprising overall and sectional minimum percentile scored in CAT 2015. Instead of becoming a selection round, the process is more expected to become an elimination round. Now the biggest worry for the new IIMs would be whether they would get sufficient number of candidates according to their respective intake in flagship PGP 2016-18 batch

Effective list with 8000 candidates
All these IIMs will announce their individual and separate shortlist which may have hundreds of same candidates as their shortlisting criteria remain more or less same. Hence, effectively there could be hardly 8000 to 9000 candidates who are distinct from other ones when the shortlists by these IIMs are announced.

It is surprising to note when the 6 of 12 IIMs have joined hands to go for Common Admission Process (CAP) to be co-ordinated by IIM Kashipur, they have decided to accept the merit list generated after CAP 2016 but have declined to announce the common shortlist and have adopted to the process of announcing the individual shortlists despite having similar shortlisting criteria. The reason is obvious as common shortlists for these IIMs, if announced, would have included more number of candidates than they could have been there despite clubbing all these shortlists.

10 times of intake to be shortlisted
Almost all the new IIMs would have an intake of not fewer than 140 candidates as per the decision taken in the Cabinet meeting of Government of India on June 24, 2015 and was conveyed by MHRD. Unless and until anything is contrary to this fact, each of the 12 IIMs will have to shortlist around 1400 candidates who have scored the desired percentile in CAT 2015 as per their admission parameters. The total comes to 16800 candidates. There are a few IIMs whose intake has either been increased to 180 or is proposed to increase to higher level. Accordingly in all 18000 candidates are proposed to be shortlisted.

Top IIMs shortlisted distinct candidates
IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore, Kozhikode, Shillong all have distinct shortlisting criteria. This fact enables different candidates to get shortlisted by these IIMs. A 100 percentiler may not necessarily be shortlisted by IIM Bangalore but he/she can sure be shortlisted by IIM Ahmedabad as per its shortlisting process of calculating the AR score.

IIM Ahmedabad has shortlisted 24128 candidates for PI-WAT round but not the same candidates are shortlisted by IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta although many of them have figured in the shortlists of these top IIMs.

New IIMs to shortlist same candidates?
With 90 percentile overall and 80 percentile sectional required in CAT 2015 and all the candidates opting for all the IIMs, these 12 new IIMs might end up with same candidates as they would be shortlisting only on the basis of CAT 2015 scores without taking into account other factors.

Except IIM Rohtak, all other IIMs namely IIM Kashipur, IIM Ranchi, IIM Raipur, IIM Trichy, IIM Udaipur have same shortlisting criteria based solely on CAT 2015 scores. Out of 6 newest IIMs, IIM BodhGaya and IIM Sirmaur have announced their shortlisting criteria while IIM Amritsar, IIM Nagpur, IIM Sambalpur, IIM Visakhapatnam are yet to announce their admission policy for PGP 2016-18 batch. However, it is expected that the admission policy of these newest IIMs would not be much different and would be based only on CAT 2015 percentile score.

It is possible that out all the remaining 90 percentilers with required sectional percentile also, many  expecting to be shortlisted by the new IIMs may find themselves not shortlisted by these IIMs and number of them could figure in the shortlists of all the IIMs.

Fewer candidates than required available
1814 candidates out of 179602 CAT 2015 test takers have been awarded 99 and above percentile and 9003 have scored 95 and above percentile but 24128 have been shortlisted by IIMA alone due to change in shortlisting criteria. In all, around 50000 candidates have been shortlisted only by old IIMs.

There are not fewer than 20000 to 25000 candidates who have not been able to qualify the minimum sectional percentile score in CAT 2015 despite scoring a decent overall percentile. Besides thousands have preferred the top private B-schools like SPJIMR, MDI, IMI, IMT, TAPMI to the new IIMs. So where do these IIMs draw the suitable candidates from, unless and until, they reduce the minimum required overall and sectional percentile in CAT 2015.

The new IIMs need to amend their admission policy and shortlisting criteria to get sufficient number of candidates for PI-WAT 2016 round, else many of them may not get full intake of students in their class rooms in 2016.
