Wait till April or first week of May, and you may be one of candidates pursuing MBA from an IIM despite getting low scores in CAT 2015
New IIMs have decided to reduce the qualifying CAT 2015 score requirement for admission to their flagship PGP 2016-18 batch

Doing MBA 2016 from an IIM and that too with not so good scores in CAT 2015 may not be a dream but you may have to wait for the surprise till April and may be till the first week of May 2016 also. IIMs are the first preference of almost all the candidates to pursue MBA and this year the new IIMs are trying to help you to turn your dream into reality.

While the MBA market is picking up by leaps & bounds with higher placements in 2016, the new IIMs have decided to reduce the qualifying CAT 2015 score requirement for admission to their flagship PGP 2016-18 batch. Except IIM Visakhapatnam all the other 5 new IIMs have substantially reduced the qualifying percentile score required for admission 2016. Interestingly IIM Visakhapatnam may not need to reduce the qualifying overall CAT percentile, as it kept the same at a low level last year also.

Expect e-mail by April 15
With the announced admission policy and selection criteria, the 6 new IIMs have decided to ask for the re-confirmation of interest from the eligible candidates who while registering for CAT 2015 also opted to be considered for the new IIMs. These IIMs propose to send an email to all such eligible candidates and will ask them to re-confirm their interest in the respective IIM by a stipulated date, say by the end of April 2016 or so.

Expect final shortlist in May
New IIMs propose to declare the shortlist of candidates for admission or for final admission round in the first week of May 2016. All these IIMs will independently finalise their admission process.

Admission in 3 IIMs through CAP 2016
3 out of 6 IIMs have already participated in Common Admission Process (CAP) 2016 co-ordinated by IIM Kashipur for total 9 IIMs. New IIMs  who participated in CAP 2016 are IIM Amritsar, IIM BodhGaya and IIM Sambalpur. On the basis of merit list received after the CAP round from IIM Kashipur, they will finalise the admission for PGP 2016-18. It may involve sending the email asking reconfirmation of interest or direct admission offer to the eligible candidates.

IIM Amritsar: Admission through CAP
IIM Amritsar has participated in the CAP 2016 and on the basis of the merit list in CAP round, it will add scores of other components like academics, work experience to generate the final admission offer. Although IIM Amritsar is yet to announce its admission policy for PGP 2016-18, the B-school will also ask for the reconfirmation of interest in the month of April 2016.

The qualifying score in CAT 2015 for IIM Amritsar could be 80 sectional percentile and 90 overall percentile.

IIM BodhGaya: 40% weightage to WAT & PI
Apart from awarding weightages to academics, work experience, IIM BodhGaya proposes to award 40% weightage to PI-WAT in generation of final merit list. The scores of PI-WAT obtained in CAP 2016 will form the major admission criterion. Role of CAT 2015 scores will remain limited in the final admission process.

IIM BodhGaya needs only 70 sectional percentile but 96 overall percentile for admission to PGP 2016-18 batch.

IIM Nagpur: No GD-PI
IIM Nagpur mentored by IIM Ahmedabad will also ask for reconfirmation and expression of interest by April 15, 2016.  IIM Nagpur also does not propose to go for GD/PI round and may finalise the admission on the basis of scores obtained in CAT 2015; past academic performance (PAP) and Work experience (WE).

The required minimum qualifying CAT 2015 percentile score for PGP 2016-18 prescribed by IIM Nagpur is 90 overall and 80 sectional.

IIM Sambalpur
IIM Sambalpur has participated in the Common Admission Process (CAP) 2016 coordinated by IIM Kashipur. On the basis of its WAT and PI round the final admission offer will be made by IIM Sambalpur to suitable candidates. There will not be any separate WAT-PI round for the candidates showing interest in admission to IIM Sambalpur.

Apart from awarding high weightage to CAP scores, IIM Sambalpur will also take into account the candidate’s Past Academic Performance (PAP), Work Experience (WE), and performance in CAT 2015.

IIM Sambalpur needs a minimum of 80 sectional percentile and 90 overall percentile in CAT 2015 to consider the candidate for admission.

IIM Sirmaur: Admission without GD/PI
Clarifying its admission process for PGP 2016-18, IIM Sirmaur says “IIM Sirmaur will ask for expression of interest in the first week May 2016, after which merit list will be prepared as per the guidelines stated in the admission policy document.”

The admission policy also clarifies that the final admission offer by IIM Sirmaur will be finalized without conduct of any GD-PI process. According to IIM Sirmaur “There will be no GD/PI for admission to IIM Sirmaur this year.”

IIM Sirmaur needs only 80 overall and 75 sectional percentile for admission to flagship PGP 2016-18 batch.

IIM Visakhapatnam: Different admission criteria
The admission policy and selection process at IIM Visakhapatnam is different from other new IIMs. Although IIM Visakhapatnam will also ask for the reconfirmation of interest around April 15, 2016 and will send an e mail to the eligible candidates, it will conduct separate PI-WAT round.

Only those candidates who are considered eligible on the basis of CAT 2015 scores (80 & 85 sectional; 90 overall); past academic performance; work experience and gender diversity (if applicable) can go to the PI-WAT round. IIM Visakhapatnam has adopted a 3 stage selection process which is entirely different from its peers.

Incidentally, IIM Visakhapatnam has emerged as the only new IIM which has successfully completed its summer placement for the first PGP 2015-17 batch.

All the 6 IIMs propose to generate their own merit lists according to their admission and selection criteria. All this is going to happen in the months of April & May, 2016. It will be a great opportunity to get an IIM without much hurdle and at low CAT scores. It could serve as another chance for those who did not make to the final merit list or are not shortlisted by rest 13 older IIMs.

You may expect further reduction in the minimum required CAT 2015 percentile score by the time the shortlist is announced by these IIMs in the month of May 2016.
