Based on the award of percentile scores in MAHCET 2016, admission process to MBA/MMS 2016 in top B-schools of Maharashtra may see low scorers getting into JBIMS, SIMSREE, K J Somaiya, N L Dalmiya among other highly ranked colleges. The result has surprised the test takers and academicians alike as not only there is a dip in high scores substantial gap also exists in the highest scores with top percentile. The scoring pattern in MAHCET 2016 is a clear indication that low scorers may also explore admission opportunities in top B-schools of Maharashtra.

Highest score dips: Low scorer awarded highest percentile
Although 9 candidates have been awarded the highest 99.99 percentile in MAHCET 2016, the marks scored by them are much lower than that of candidates who scored the similar percentile last year. Besides, the scoring pattern also indicates sufficient gap among the top scorers.

The highest percentile of 99.99 in MAHCET 2016 has been awarded to the candidates scoring as low as 151 out of 200 marks as against awarded last year to the 5 candidates scoring 170 marks out of maximum 200 marks, . On the top of it, the same percentile continues to be awarded to higher scoring candidates and goes upto the highest scorer who scored 165 out of 200.

While there is only 1 candidate who has scored 165, the next candidate has scored only 160. After a gap of 4 marks there is again 1 candidate with 156 marks followed by 1 candidate with 154 marks. After that there are 2 candidates with 153 marks followed by 1 candidate with 152 and 2 candidates with 151. All these 9 candidates have been awarded 99.99 percentile. The candidate with 136 marks has also scored a percentile above 99.

High percentile at low scores: 63 against 1864 candidates
Very few candidates have scored 136 and above marks and have been able to cross 99.9 percentile bar.
It is surprising to note that as against 1864 candidates who scored 136 and above marks last year in MAHCET, there are only 63 candidates achieving this feat in MAHCET 2016. It implies that admission chances for low scorers have increased in top B-schools.

JBIMS: Expect Cut off at 133
In fact, a percentiler below 99.90 in MAHCET does not expect admission to MMS programme in JBIMS, Mumbai. The merit at JBIMS crosses even the 99.90 if there are more candidates in the higher percentile range. But it appears that for an intake of 120 in MMS 2016-18, JBIMS may have to reduce the cut off as fewer candidates may be available with this percentile score. Moreover, it is also possible that many of them might have also appeared in CAT 2015 and might have scored high and have been shortlisted by FMS Delhi or other top B-schools. Such candidates may no longer be interested to study in JBIMS. This will further improve the admission chances to low scorers in MAHCET 2016.

It is expected that the cut off at JBIMS may go down as low as 133 or 134 for admission to MMS 2016-18. Unlike the admission process held independently by JBIMS for admission to MMS programme last year, the admission to MMS 2016-18 batch will be through the Centralized Admission process. JBIMS Mumbai has confirmed vide its notification dated February 5, 2016 ‘Admission for Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai for two years Masters in Management Studies (MMS) programme will be done through Centralised Admission Process (CAP) of Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Government of Maharashtra’.
