MICA Ahmedabad celebrated its Annual Convocation on April 2 with 158 students of the 21st batch of Post Graduate Diploma in Management - Communications (PGDM-C) and 23 students of the 25th batch of Post Graduate Certificate Programme in Crafting Creative Communication (PGCP-CCC) graduating at the institute.

The convocation began with the Invocation ceremony, and was declared open after the lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, Mr. Bhaskar Bhat, Managing Director, Titan Company Ltd., Mr. Madhukar Kamath, Chairperson, Mudra Foundation Society and MICA Governing Council and President, MICA, Dr. Nagesh Rao, Outgoing Director, MICA and Dr. Preeti Shroff, Dean, MICA.

Mr. Madhukar Kamath extended his warm welcome to those present, and introduced the Chief Guest Mr. Bhaskar Bhat. Post the welcome address, the diplomas and certificates were conferred on the students by the Governing Council of MICA and the students individually received the diplomas and certificates from the Chief Guest as the Executive Registrar Mr. Sethu Iyer called out their names. Following which Dr. Nagesh Rao announced the Bronze, Silver and Gold medals for the PGDM-C students and merit certificates for the PGCP-CCC students and the Chief Guest presented the medals and certificates to the students.

After the presentation of medals and merit certificates, the annual “PAT Memorial Outstanding Alumnus Award” was announced. This award was instituted last year in the memory of former MICA Director Prof. Atul Tandan (or PAT as he was called lovingly) who served MICA from 2001 to 2009 and passed away in March 2015. This award is given to a MICA alumnus who has had a great career growth, occupies a leadership position and has contributed to societal good. The winner is selected from amongst the nominations received from MICA fraternity. This year the award was given to Ms. Shraddha Sharma, a 2004 alumnus of MICA’s Post Graduate Programme in Design Communication Management (PGPDCM). Ms. Shradha Sharma is the Founder of YourStory Media Pvt. Ltd. and serves as its Chief Editor. YourStory Media was founded in 2008 and is India's leading online media venture for Entrepreneurs and Startups. YourStory has told more than 20,000 stories of entrepreneurs and reaches over 10 million engaged readers every month in 12 Indian languages.

Following this, the MICA Year Book was released. The Year Book is an old tradition at MICA and captures the essence of nostalgia and fond memories for the outgoing batch of students.

This was followed by a convocation address by the Chief Guest, Mr. Bhaskar Bhat, MD, Titan Company Limited. Addressing the students, Mr. Bhat said, “We are all part of various institutions, our families, our schools, our colleges, our companies and so on. When you are part of an institution you must always strive to give your everything for that institution. You must always put the institution ahead of yourself. Only then the institution pays you back by putting you ahead.” Emphasising on the need for remaining curious, he observed, “Planning for your career is not something you do at one point in time; it is something that is ongoing, something that you keep going back to. The simple reason for this is change. The world is moving much faster now than when I entered the world of business. Business planning cycles are becoming shorter and shorter.  The world around you changes, your aspirations change, your preferences change. Change has become the only constant.” Finally he added, “I do not believe there is one secret to success. First of all what is success itself is something that each of you has to define for yourself.

And if I were to turn the question on its head and talk about how to be more effective, many thoughts come to mind. But I would like to draw your attention to something that is passion of us at Titan and that is TIME. TIME is something that we very often take for granted. We not only take our own time for granted but we also take others time for granted. I would like to shift one paradigm for you today. Think of Time as a natural resource, as a resource that has been given to every human being but something that humans cannot alter. The old adage Time and Tide wait for no man cannot be truer. Respect it like we would respect any other natural resource. Value it like we value gold or diamonds.

Ask yourselves these two questions every day at the start of your day: What will I do with my TIME today that I have not done before? and What will I do today with my TIME that will make a difference to someone else?

Only you own and control your time – Everyone will want a part of it; your family, your friends, your organization and they will want different things from your time. Family will be about spending quality time with them, friends will be about social togetherness and your organization will want you to spend your time productively.  But in all this do not forget to set aside time for yourself. Time to learn and time to reflect.”

Mr. Bhat’s motivating speech was followed by an appreciation by the outgoing MICA Director Dr. Nagesh Rao. He said, “It has been an honor and privilege to serve MICA for the last four years. I am happy to see MICA as a purpose-driven institute that is set to scale new heights.”

Afterwards, Mr. Madhukar Kamath, the new President of MICA, delivered his address. He said, “Today we add close to 200 MICAns from the Graduating batch of 2016 to the over 3000 MICAns who have made MICA what it is today – India’s premier Management school specialising in Strategic Marketing and Communication. On this occasion I would like to thank all MICAns for their achievements in their chosen careers, for their contributions to the society at large and for wearing MICA proudly on their chest wherever they have travelled around the globe. Thank you MICAns!”

Dean Dr.Preeti Shroff also addressed the students and the audience. Dr. Shroff said, “On the occasion of MICA's 21st Convocation we proudly celebrate the academic learning and achievements of our graduating group of students.  MICA has prepared these students to embrace the promise of successful careers in Management, Strategic Marketing, Creative Communications, Digital Media and Sustainability Management.

They are also prepared as leaders to face and address any and all professional challenges in a rapidly evolving global market and industry.  Above all, the MICAns are a creative and compassionate community of global professionals and life-long learners who will make their mark in the world and make it an exciting place for us all - we wish all MICA graduates the best in their professional and personal journeys ahead."
