Year by year, the number of CAT takers are increasing. For CAT 07, held on November 18, 2008, the reported number of CAT applicants was over 2.3 lakhs.

Considering this trend, IIMs are planning to make some modifications to the CAT process. But online testing is yet to get a nod.

According to the recent clarification published on CAT website (www.catiim.in), in view of increasing number of candidates, IIMs are considering various alternatives for modifying the process of conducting CAT, if necessary. Online testing is one of those alternatives. However, IIM-A says that the proposals are at the preliminary stage of discussion.

This clarification was published on the CAT website in response to an article published by leading pink daily on February 4.

Says IIM-A, “Our attention has been drawn to reports in a certain section of the media about the Common Admission Test being conducted by the IIMs going online. It is clarified for the benefit of the student community that there is no plan to conduct CAT online at this juncture."

Of course, as online population increases and IT & Internet infrastructure improves, online testing will become a viable mode for admission testing in India. The big example of huge number of applicants having embraced internet was that when the IIMs announced their online results for Common Admission Test (CAT) 07 on January 8, 2008, their website crashed due to heavy traffic.
