In the review meeting held on May 18 and also attended by Secretary, Union Ministry of Urban Development, the Chief Secretary of Karnataka expressed concern on remaining inclined to IIMs only while equally capable MBAs are also produced by other B schools
Change the mindset that only IIM produces good graduates. Why not other MBA graduates? Arvind Jadhav, Chief Secretary Karnataka

“Change the mindset that only IIM produces good graduates. Why not other MBA graduates?” said  Arvind Jadhav, Chief Secretary  Karnataka while going through the opinion of Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) that only graduates from IIMs would be hired as professionals to be part of the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the smart city project in Belagavi and Davangere.

In the meeting to review the progress of various schemes sponsored by the Central Government in Karnataka, the Chief Secretary was of the opinion that there was need to change our mind set as not only of IIMs but the students of other good B-schools are also well qualified and capable to contribute in big projects like Smart City and Swacch Bharat (Clean India) mission. The review meeting held on May 17, 2016 in Bengaluru was also attended by Rajiv Gauba, Secretary to the Union Ministry of Urban Development.

Decentralize & Empower the local level: Mantra for Smart City Project
Top authorities namely Mr. Jadhav and Mr. Gauba were of the view that under the smart city concept, the idea is to decentralise and give more powers at the local level. In case all the projects above Rs. 10 crore are sent to the empowered panel they might never get started. For Swacch Bharat Mission at present there are 75 cities in the Centre’s list for ranking, this list is proposed to go up to 500 cities across the country

Other B-schools equally good
Accordingly, the observation of Chief Secretary of Karnataka and  Secretary to the Union Ministry of Urban Development that the graduates from other B-schools could also be as capable as from IIMs is not without substance.

In fact there are number of other B-schools where talent and leadership building is the prime concern. With an equally excellent learning in these B-schools of India, the MBA education is offered at lower fee and high placements with due counselling

Are IIMs losing charm?
Is it the brand name only that is pushing the IIMs as the most sought after B-schools in India despite the fact that their fee structure is highest in the country with PGP programme fee range going from Rs.13 lakhs to Rs.19.5 lakhs plus other expenses.

IIM Graduates getting deferred placement
Almost all the IIMs have completed their placement 2016. However, despite getting placed in the companies like Hopscotch, CarDekho owned by Girnarsoft among others, the joining of many IIM students has been delayed by 5-6 months due to one or other reason. There are around 200 to 250 such students who are waiting for their joining.

This problem is not only of new IIMs, the students of top rated older IIMs like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and of comparatively new IIM Udaipur  are passing through such trend.
It appears that more students from other B-schools in non-IIM category would be included to plan, devise action plan and actively contribute to Smart City Projects in near future. Since the Smart City Project is a fairly long term project, it would need more MBAs from across the country.
