Since none of the IIMs need AICTE approval as they are statutory autonomous entities and probably their programmes may not be adversely affected
The dual degree courses have been closed and no fresh admission should be permitted from AY (academic year) 2016 17 AICTE circular dated May 19, 2016

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has asked all the universities and colleges offering 5 year BBA/MBA dual degree programme not to go for admission from the year 2016. As such the class 12 passed students aspiring to take admission in dual degree BBA/MBA in AICTE approved institutes will not be allowed to fulfil their dream without appearing again in the MBA entrance test after completing their graduation.

Issuing Circular ref  File No. Southern/1,-2077381,4/87/2014/AB dated 19th May 2016 to all affiliating universities of AICTE approved institutions, the controller of technical and management education in India says “The AICTE has decided the following: the dual degree courses have been closed and no fresh admission should be permitted from AY (academic year) 2016-17.”

The students who are already pursuing such courses will be allowed an exit option after completion of their 3 year course but there will be no fresh admission for the dual degree courses.

Will it impact IPM at IIM Indore
Whether the decision would adversely affect the 5 year Integrated Programme in Management offered by IIM Indore is yet to be seen. It may be noted that none of the IIMs need AICTE approval as they are statutory autonomous entities and probably their programmes may not be adversely affected.

While directing the institutes not to continue with their dual degree programmes AICTE has also stated vide its aforesaid circular “The Institutions who were running dual degree course (s) are given Extension of Approval for five [05) years Integrated MBA courses in lieu of five (05) years dual degree courses of MBA/MAM introduced by AICTE.”

Impact on reputed universities
The second decision line might save the reputed universities like Lucknow, Nirma among others who are offering 5 year dual degree courses and might rename their long term 5 year management courses as per AICTE guidelines. However, the outcome of the decision is yet to see the ground reality.

Top B-schools not running dual degree programmes
The top 25 MBA/PGDM B-schools in India may not get affected by this decision as they do not run such dual degree programmes. It appears that the move has been initiated by AICTE to check the 3rd or 4th tier institutes who are more inclined to play with the career of the students and are least interested in offering quality management education to them.

New guideline replaces dual degree
The decision of AICTE to award ‘Extension of Approval for five [05) years Integrated MBA courses in lieu of five (05) years dual degree courses of MBA/MAM introduced by AICTE’ has substituted the dual degree programme but has not clarified whether the candidates will be allowed to have exit option in the new system as against the dual degree course where AICTE has allowed the students to either exercise exit option after completion of BBA or complete the course if in 4th  year or final year of dual-degree programme.

For those who are studying in these courses AICTE has provided “There will be an exit option at the end of three years for the students, who have joined the dual degree courses in 2015-16 and prior to that, by awarding a BBA (bachelor in business administration) degree instead of a BM (bachelor in management) degree.”

“The Students who have completed four years should be asked to complete one more year and will be allowed BBA/MBA degree after completion”, since there is no exit option at the end of fourth year.”

AICTE was the authority which started 5 year dual degree courses in 2012-13 to address the changing scenario in management education and requirement. But  it appears that regulator is caught in its own web and has to shut down these programmes.
