The role of regulator is to mentor and facilitate the institutions, and not merely act as an inspector and find faults with the system. That is the key message coming from the BIMTECH Commencement day Address delivered by AICTE Chairman Dr Anil Sahasrabudhe on June 19 at its Greater Noida campus.

Addressing the faculty, incoming students and parents community, Dr Sahasrabudhe said, “In today’s digital era, Education Models need to evolve from one way delivery of information to a discussion with students on solving real life problems, using the theoretical frameworks. The role of AICTE has to change from being a regulator to a facilitator. AICTE must mentor and encourage the institution to grow and excel.”

Complimenting business schools, Dr Sahasrabudhe said, “B-schools have been ahead of rest of disciplines in offering student-centred pedagogy. They have adopted case-method of learning where participants focus on discussing real life challenges that a company is facing. This is the right approach to teaching and learning.”

These comments by AICTE Chairman Dr Sahasrabudhe gave a glimpse of his thinking, and come as a relief to hundreds of B-schools who have been miffed by AICTE’s notifications that have tried to strangulate the autonomy of well-performing private institutions.

Reflecting on the recent churn in management and engineering education where hundreds of institutions have closed down in last few years, Dr Sahasrabudhe said, “In last few decades, the technical education sector had expanded very rapidly. While this increased the access to higher education, it also led to deterioration in quality of education at the lower end of the pyramid. So the current churn is nothing to worry about. Poor performing institutions must go. Top tier institutions must mentor the middle tier institutions, and hence uplift the overall quality. AICTE is introducing a mentorship program where we will be encouraging the top institutions to mentor the rest of the institutions.”

Putting emphasis on encouraging entrepreneurship and start-ups in education institutions, Dr Sahasrabudhe said, “B-schools and engineering colleges focus merely on placements. The number of start-ups from B-school campuses is very few. We need to change this. ACITE has formulated a committee to recommend how we can promote Start-ups and Entrepreneurship in campuses. We will create an enabling environment for promoting entrepreneurship in our campuses very soon.”

Dr  Anil Dattatraya Sahasrabudhe, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Guwahati  joined All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) as Chairman on 17th July 2015. Dr Sahasrabudhe is a career academician with an illustrious career of 29 years and has held several important Academic, Research and Administrative positions. He started his career as Scientific Officer, at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1983 and moved to Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE) as Engineer in the same year. He was Director, College of Engineering, Pune (CoEP) since 2006 on deputation from IIT, Guwahati  prior to joining as AICTE Chairman.
