IIM Raipur new batch with more women and non-engineers inaugurated; achieves many firsts

New admission policy at IIM Raipur and new CAT exam structure provide level playing field for all the candidates from diversified background to score good percentile

Not only the top IIM Ahmedabad which has witnessed rising diversity in its new batch, the relatively younger generation IIM Raipur has also welcomed its 7th PGP batch and 5th FPM batch consisting of more non-engineers and women candidates in its PGP 2016-18 batch. The new batch has been inaugurated with a 4 day orientation programme.

The students from the incoming batch of PGP 2016-18 at IIM Raipur are from diverse backgrounds ranging from commerce, engineering, management studies, medical and life sciences. According to IIM Raipur ‘The students have shown a lot of enthusiasm and a spirit of healthy competition and have soon adapted themselves for the next two years of extensive corporate grooming.’

The new batch began with its journey with dreams and aspirations of becoming the corporate leaders.  With the learning and skills that they would acquire at IIM Raipur, the students are sure that they will be able to shape their corporate careers and turn their dreams into realities.

15 days of Introductory classes & Orientation
At IIM Raipur, students have to spend around a fortnight on introductory/preparatory classes and orientation to get the glimpse of brand IIM and to decided what is in stock for them in next 2 years.  One of the women students with medical back ground, Aditi Koomar (B.Ds) who also has 7 months work experience as a probationary officer in IDBI bank found that doing MBA/PGDM from IIM was good and decided to take CAT and finally landed at IIM Raipur. The orientation process has given the flavor of the corporate life. The brief spell of a fortnight remained full of lectures, assignments and activities.

More Commerce graduates join IIM Raipur
Namrata , B.Com. from SRCC;  Sagar Kothari, B.Com, St Xavier’s Kolkata; Hershita Tigga, B.Com from SRCC are only a few of the many examples of academic diversity and more women joining IIM Raipur. There is also a good number of students with engineering back ground but the new admission policy at IIM Raipur and new CAT exam structure provide level playing field for all the candidates from diversified background to score good percentile. The process is also expected to continue in CAT 2016.

Learning begins on day 1
After an eventful start of the PGP programme with the orientation ceremony and the preparatory classes, students had a great deal of learning from the various activities organized by the clubs of IIM Raipur -Mantra, Finatix, HRidhaan, Consulting and Entrepreneurship Club (CEC), Operations Club (OPEP), CUSP and Kartavya.

According to Namrata “International Yoga Day celebration has inculcated in us the need of healthy living and high thinking. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to interact with many eminent people from the corporate world. The students got a chance to show their creativity and talent through the cultural activities. The teachings of the professors and dignitaries have instilled in the students a new force of confidence that they have entered one of the premier B-schools in India.”

Interaction opportunity with Corporate Who’s who
Preparatory classes at IIM Raipur offered good opportunity to its new batch students to interact with Who’s who of corporate world.  Prabhash Sharma, a Civil Engineer from NIT Surathkal has joined IIM Raipur after putting in a year of work with Tata Housing. According to him “The Preparatory Classes that made our knowledge base sound was followed by the four day Orientation Programme, where we got to meet some of the most influential leaders from the corporate world like Mr. Raj Raghavan from Amazon , Mr. Nikhil Sahni from Yes bank to name a few.”

New students appreciate their seniors for introducing them to unique IIM culture. Within a short period Students coming from different academic back ground have got the opportunity to participate in numerous events like IPL auction, Junkyard, Beer-game, toastmaster among others.

Diverse batch profile & International immersion help in peer learning
Pratik Garg a B.Tech from IIT Roorkee has worked with ZS Associates as a Business Analyst before joining the PGP programme at IIM Raipur. In his view he has experienced a high level of innovative energy in the unique culture and business ecosystem at IIM Raipur Right from the day 1.

The diverse batch profile at IIM Raipur where students are not only engineers but also economics graduates and doctors, helps in generating and exchanging more ideas and learning from varied perspectives.

The curriculum at IIM Raipur is anchored in the fundamentals of general management, from finance and marketing to strategy and organizational behavior.  During his stay at IIM Raipur Prateek feels, “I expect I would develop leadership skills across multiple dimensions to be able to deliver strategic, operational and organizational innovations in the corporate world as well as the society. Also, I’m particularly ecstatic about the Student Exchange Programme at IIM Raipur through which I can have direct exposure to foreign universities.”

Sagar Kothari who was studying CA with Institute of Chartered Accountants of India after doing B. Com. looks forward to participate in student exchange programme which also improves the placement.  In his view the relatively smaller batch size at IIM Raipur has awarded the opportunity of interacting with the industry stalwarts from reputable companies who shared their experiences and provided tips and tricks about making the best of these 2 years at IIM Raipur.

The biggest benefit of diverse batch profile according to Hershita Tigga, a B.Com from SRCC and IIM Raipur student for PGP 2016-18 batch, is that the events and peer learning teach team work and time management.

IIM Raipur continues to ride high on its strong relationship with the corporate from India and abroad, with organizations from different sectors expressing interest in recruitment.

Presently IIM Raipur operates from the Government Engineering College Campus, Raipur.
