India has again missed the top 200 places in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2016-17, result of which were announced on September 21 for 980 institutes from 79 countries. Although 31 universities from India have been ranked among 980, it is only Indian Institute of Science, (IISc) Bangalore which figured among top 250 world universities. IISc has moved up from among top 251-300 slot to 200-251 slot in THE Rankings, marking a significant improvement.

The University of Oxford has been placed at the #1 while the 5 times top ranked California Institute of Technology has gone down to second place. In the 12 year history this is the first time that UK University has secured the 1st rank pushing down the USA University.

Till last year THE Rankings included 800 world universities but for the first time this year 980 universities have been included.

On elevation of Oxford University of UK to top position, Phil Baty, Editor of THE Rankings warned the country against consistent improvement of Asian Universities Ranking positions and said “UK will have to watch out for Asia’s continuing ascent. Although the notion of Asia as the ‘next higher education superpower’ has become something of a cliché in recent years, the continent’s rise in the rankings is real and growing.”

Out of 980 universities from 79 countries, 289 Asian universities from 24 countries are among the total ranked universities with National University of Singapore (NUS) at # 24 and Peking University of China at #29.
IIT Bombay has been ranked among top 400. IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur are in top 500. IIT Kharagpur, Jadavpur University, IIT Roorkee are ranked among top 600. Rest including other IITs, Amrita University, SRM University among others ranked from 600 to 980 band.
