Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) Delhi has announced a different admission 2017 criteria for CAT 2016 toppers to improve the ratio of non-engineers in its MBA 2017-19 batch. Apart from scoring a high percentile in CAT 2016, candidates will have to ensure that they also score a high sectional score as each section will be awarded varying weightage at the time of shortlisting.  FMS Delhi will not accept any other exam scores except that of CAT 2016. Confirming the process, FMS Delhi clarifies “FMS uses CAT score for shortlisting the candidates for the above programmes. IIMs have no role either in the selection process or in the conduct of the programme.”

One of the oldest and highest RoI B-schools in the country is a dream campus for CAT aspirants who wish to get admission in one of the top rated B-schools in India. Online application process for FMS Delhi Admission 2017 will remain open till November 30, 2016 for CAT 2016 aspirants who have already registered for CAT 2016. Please note CAT 2016 is the mandatory exam to apply for MBA admission 2017 at FMS Delhi.

Changes to have more Non-Engineers
With a view to increase the number of Non-Engineers in its class room, FMS Delhi has overhauled its admission policy and has decided to award weightage to sectional scores in CAT 2016. Earlier FMS Delhi used to shortlist the candidates at the first stage on the basis of overall CAT percentile only.

According to Dr M. L. Singla, Dean FMS Delhi, “To encourage diversity of Gender and Academic Disciplines, for the purpose of shortlisting candidates for Interview Process different weightages shall be assigned to the scores of different sections of the CAT 2016. A composite score shall be computed giving weightages of 30%, 30%, and 40% to the scores of QA, DI/LR and VRC sections respectively as provided by the CAT Centre for the CAT 2016 Examination for candidates who apply to FMS”

Sectional weightage instrumental to get more non-engineers
80% of the CAT 2016 aspirants come from engineering back ground and 90% of them need a good improvement to score high in VARC section as compared to the candidates coming from non-engineering back ground who need less time to devote to prepare for VARC section.

With the changed shortlisting criteria on the basis of CAT 2016 score, FMS Delhi has announced that it will award 10% higher weightage to VARC sectional scores. It implies that in the process to admit more non-engineers, better performing candidates in VARC section will get preference. So, even if 2 candidates score high equal percentile in CAT 2016 but have deviation in their sectional scores, the one with higher percentile in VARC will be preferred to the other with lower percentile score in VARC section.

Understand with example
If a candidate scores 99 percentile in CAT 2016 but has a low percentile in VARC and higher percentile in Quant and DILR sections he may stand less chances to be shortlisted by FMS than the candidate who has scored 97 percentile overall in CAT 2016 but has higher percentile in VARC and slightly low percentile in Quant and DILR.

For example- Candidate-1 with 99 percentile
This candidate with CAT 2016 percentile score of 99 has sectional percentile scores of – 100 in Quant; 98 in DILR and 80 in VARC

After FMS awards weightage: 30% of 100=30 in Quant; 30% of 98=29.4 in DILR; 40% of 80=32 in VARC. Total points the candidate has scored in shortlisting process are – 91.6

Now Candidate-2 with 97 percentile
This candidate with CAT 2016 percentile score of 97 has sectional percentile scores of – 94 in Quant; 92 in DILR and 99 in VARC

FMS awards weightage: 30% of 94=28.2 in Quant; 30% of 92=27.6 in DILR; 40% of 99=39.6 in VARC. Total points the candidate has scored are – 95.4

The drastic difference can be seen. This fact will be visible after declaration of CAT 2016 result when number of 99 percentilers will lag behind and the candidates who score lower percentile in CAT 2016 with higher score in VARC section will get shortlisted for PI round.

Focus on VARC more: Only remedy
It is a general perception that candidates coming from non-engineering back ground can do better in VARC but it is not necessary. FMS Delhi has not awarded any bonus marks for non-engineers at the 1st stage of shortlisting. Accordingly, whether you are from engineering or non engineering back ground, you will have to score high in VARC section to get shortlisted by FMS Delhi for MBA admission 2017.

According to CAT 2016 preparation expert, Prof S K Agarwal, it means that for next 30 days you should focus more on RC which contributes 70% weightage to VARC section and has only MCQ type of questions. Another key point of preparation is that the 10 Non-MCQs in VARC section of CAT 2016 will not have any negative marking. So it will be better to prepare well on Jumbled Paragraphs, Para summary type questions as they are expected in CAT 2016 exam. It is suggested to attempt the non-MCQs first and then proceed to attempt the MCQs in VARC section of CAT 2016.

FMS Delhi is the dream destination for MBA aspirants due to its very low fee structure and high placements. The 2 years fee for full time MBA 2017-19 programme is less than Rs.25000/- and the average placement in 2016 has gone upto Rs.20.5 lakhs per annum. More than 2000 candidates are shortlisted by FMS Delhi for final admission while the ratio of applications goes beyond 1:100. Many candidates despite getting admission offers from IIMs, prefer FMS Delhi due to its various USPs like high RoI.

Applicants to FMS Delhi MBA 2017-19 programme should remember that the admission process will close on November 30, 2016. Before that on Sunday November 27, IIFT entrance test is going to be held and 4 days after the FMS admission 2017 process closes, CAT 2016 will be held on December 4. It is advisable to apply well in time to avoid any unpleasant situation of missing the last date to apply as FMS Delhi has the reputation of not extending its last date of application.
