Updated on November 19, 2016
95 or 96 percentile in CAT 2016 may not be needed to get shortlisted by IIM Trichy, Rohtak, Raipur, Ranchi, Kashipur or Udaipur; the cut off may go much lower
For these IIMs 10000 candidates are proposed to be shortlisted for final admission round on the basis of CAT 2016 scores in the ratio of 1:10

Shed the misconception that you need 95 or 96 percentile in CAT 2016 to get shortlisted by IIMs. Admission policy for PGP 2017-19 batch announced by IIM Rohtak, IIM Raipur, IIM Tiruchirappalli, IIM Udaipur has come with bountiful relaxations including low qualifying percentile score in CAT 2016 exam to increase the number of women candidates and to increase the number of non-engineers in their class rooms. IIM Kashipur and IIM Ranchi are in the process to announce their admission policy shortly but it may not be much different from other IIMs.

Many other private B-schools like MDI Gurgaon, IMI New Delhi, SPJIMR Mumbai among others may have higher CAT 2016 percentile cut off than the IIMs for admission to 2017-18 batch. Accordingly it is very much possible that you may get shortlisted by the IIMs even with lower scores in CAT 2016.

10000 to be shortlisted in 1:10 ratio
If you are going to take CAT 2016 on December 4, 2016 and if you do not expect a very high percentile score in the exam, you should not worry as out of the 6 IIMs you will get one as 10000 candidates are to be shortlisted at  a lower percentile score as compared to other IIMs. For these IIMs 10000 candidates are proposed to be shortlisted for final admission round on the basis of CAT 2016 scores in the ratio of 1:10. It is expected that around 1000 candidates will be offered admission after final selection round in the above IIMs.

IIM Rohtak to coordinate PI round
Post CAT 2016 result declaration, IIM Rohtak  will be coordinating the Common Admission Process (CAP) 2017 for 9 IIMs namely Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi, Rohtak, Trichy and Udaipur, Amritsar, Bodh Gaya, and Sambalpur.

The 9 new IIMs  have decided to adopt a common process of WAT & PI.  In case any of the older IIMs namely Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore, Kozhikode and Lucknow, are willing to share their WAT & PI scores with the six new IIMs, the common candidates who have applied to new IIMs, need not to appear for WAT & PI process separately, else they have to appear. The common candidates will be intimated the names of older IIMs sharing WAT & PI scores with new IIMs in due course of time.

There will not be any GD round in the final PI process and WAT & PI will be the only components in the final admission round.  The CAP-IIM 2017 process is expected to be conducted in 5 cities namely New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata.

CAT 2016 percentile: Only shortlisting criterion
CAT 2016 score will be the only criterion to shortlist the candidates for WAT & PI round. The minimum required CAT 2016 percentile to qualify for shortlisting as announced by IIM Trichy, Raipur, Rohtak, Udaipur and for Kashipur & Ranchi also is not very high and stands at par with the newest IIMs like IIM Nagpur, IIM BodhGaya, IIM Sirmaur, IIM Jammu, IIM Viasakhapatnam, IIM Sambalpur and IIM Amritsar who started operation in 2015-16 only.

What you need to be shortlisted by 6 IIMs
With more number of candidates proposed to be shortlisted and proposed to be offered admission in IIMs, the CAT 2016 minimum required percentile has been reduced or has been kept at the same level in some IIMs as that of last year. Many of the new IIMs are operating below their sanctioned intake and as such making the admission criteria rigorous further can have an adverse impact driving away the candidates to other B-schools.

This factor might have also prompted these IIMs to keep the shortlisting criteria at the same standard with an increased intake. Following CAT 2016 percentile will be the bare minimum requirement as the shortlisting criteria by the 6 IIMs -

IIM Rohtak

IIM Rohtak will follow different shortlisting criteria from its peers and will consider academic excellence and diversity at the 1st stage shortlisting for CAP 2017. While merit is the prime consideration, the Institute recognizes a possibility of skewed student structure in favour of male gender and engineering and related subjects at graduation in the normal course. Hence, IIM Rohtak strives to ensure a better balance in opportunities among different subject streams and genders. According to the institute “It is also part of IIM Rohtak’s approach to duly recognize academic consistency and industrial experience.”

IIM TrichyIntake 8th PGP 2017-19 batch: 180 (Increased from 120)

Number of candidates proposed to be shortlisted: 1800

Required CAT 2016 percentile: 90

Number of candidates proposed to be shortlisted: 2400

Required CAT 2016 percentile: 90

It should be remembered that IIMs shortlist the candidates around 10 times of the sanctioned intake. Above intake may also be increased further, hence it is expected that around 10000 candidates will be shortlisted for the final admission round at these 6 IIMs. Each of these IIMs will shortlist and will prepare final merit list independent of other IIMs. Accordingly, the weightage and shortlisting criteria for these IIMs could differ although there will be common final Personal Appearance (PA) round comprising Written Ability Test (WAT) & Personal Interview (PI)
