The Placements 2010 season at XLRI Jamshedpur witnessed prestigious companies making a beeline at the MBA school’s campus. The Campus Recruitment Program 2010 was carried in the four-day traditional slotted process which saw 90% of the batch accepting offers made by some of the most coveted organizations for their Indian and International locations followed by a strategically planned rolling process which enabled 100% placements.
The Placement Process attracted 75 companies giving a total of 205 offers to a batch of 120 Business Management and 60 Personnel Management and Industrial Relations (HR) students.
The average domestic package stood at Rs. 14 lakh, a rise of close to 20% over last year’s figure. The median figure for the average domestic salary was Rs. 12.75 lakh.
SECTORAL ANALYSIS: FINANCE AND CONSULTING DOMINATE
-- Finance: XLRI’s position as a destination for premier finance roles remained unchanged this year too with 28 % of the total offers coming from the financial sector. Offers were received across a plethora of job functions such as Investment Banking, Treasury, Corporate Finance, Wholesale Banking, Commercial Banking, Retail Banking and Insurance.
Global finance majors such as Goldman Sachs, Nomura Holdings and Edelweiss offered roles in the areas of asset management and equity research. Banks such as Deutsche Bank, Citibank, HSBC, Standard Chartered, ICICI, Axis Bank and YES Bank offered roles in the treasury and foreign exchange desks as well as in their corporate and retail banking functions.
The offerings of domestic investment banks led by Centrum and SBI Capital Markets generated a lot of interest among the students.
-- Consulting: XLRI strengthened its relationship with consulting prima donnas with 25 % of the students entering the campus recruitment program receiving top notch consulting offers from McKinsey & Co., Accenture Business Consulting, Tata Strategic Management Group, Ernst & Young, Mercer Consulting, Hewitt Associates, KPMG, Deloitte Consulting, Cognizant Business Consulting & Wipro Consulting for roles in Business Advisory, Strategy and Human Capital Advisory in India and overseas.
-- Public sector: Corporate honchos from the public sector such as BHEL exclusively recruited for its M&A and financial advisory division.
-- Insurance sector: This year saw aggressive participation from the insurance sector in the product development and distribution functions lead by Aviva Life Insurance.
JOB PROFILES: MARKETING DOMINATES
-- Marketing: Marketing has drawn renewed interest from the students and was the most sought after profile with 30% accepting offers. The class of 2010 was offered diverse opportunities in the areas of branding, marketing and sales functions by FMCG majors like Procter & Gamble, Hindustan Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline, ITC, Asian Paints, Nestle, Cadbury, Marico, Reckitt Benckiser, Britannia, Pepsi, Castrol, Biocon and Amul.
-- General Management: XLRI has been the traditional recruitment destination for recruitments in the General Management and leadership profiles. This year TAS, Aditya Birla Group, Mahindra & Mahindra, RPG Group, Hinduja Group, Manipal Group and Murugappa Group made over 15% offers in several middle management positions.
-- Human Resources: Major firms in Consulting, FMCG and Finance sector picked up XLRI students for their HR departments. Various specialized roles were offered such as one by the Global Pharmaceuticals major, Novartis offering its prestigious HR Leadership Role at Basel, Switzerland exclusively to XLRI, making the highest international offer of $110,000.
-- Corporate finance: Corporate finance roles were offered by Hindustan Unilever, Cadbury, L&T and Tata Steel among others.
FIRST TIME RECRUITERS
XLRI placements 2010 had first time recruiters from the areas of financial services, insurance, pharmaceuticals and management services such as Novartis US, Virgin Mobile, Ambit Holdings, Aviva Life Insurance, and Micro Land.
LATERAL PLACEMENTS
The Lateral Placements at XLRI were an impressive prelude to the Campus Recruitment Process, with a rich mix of offers equally spread across various domains being offered to eligible lateral candidates for middle and senior level management roles. The number of Lateral offers doubled over last year with an average salary figure of Rs. 15 lakhs.
PPOs
There was a 33.33% jump in the Pre Placement offers from last year with students being awarded with attractive jobs for excellent performance during Summer Internships.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP
XLRI’s commitment to nurturing and promoting Entrepreneurship continued this year through the sustenance of Deferred Placement for encouraging students to set up their own ventures. One student signed out with deferred placements and many others capitalized on the start-ups established as a part of Summer Projects.
