MICAT, the MBA entrance exam for Mudra Institute of Communication, Ahmedabad, was held on Sunday, March 7, 2010. According to expert analysts the paper was creative and lengthy. As per the pattern of the test, it tested the personal traits, creative and out of the box thinking ability of the candidates. According to the test prep institute Career Launcher the overall difficulty level was easy to moderate.
Structure of the paper
The duration of the paper was two and half hours and consisted of three testing parts with total of 174 questions. The Part I of the exam included Reasoning (36 questions), General Awareness (25 questions), Quantitative Ability /Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (30 questions), and Verbal Ability (34 questions). The Part 2 was the Psychometric test (46 questions) and Part 3 was the Creative Ability test. In the Part I of the test, there was ¼ negative marking for each wrong answer.
Let us look at the section wise analysis of the paper.
Reasoning
According to Career Launcher, this was of easy to moderate difficulty level. “The questions of data-sufficiency and visual reasoning were relatively easy,” the CL expert mentioned. The options for each questions in this section was five.
General Awareness
This section consisted of questions on marketing, advertising, films, media and general global awareness. This section was of moderate to difficult difficulty level and the number of options was five.
Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
The overall difficulty level of this section was quite high and the section was lengthy too. The QA part consisted of mainly Arithmetic questions. “Other topics covered were P & C, probability, set theory, integral calculus (areas) etc,” the CL expert mentioned.
There were two table based DI sets and a set based on analytical reasoning. There were no questions based on geometry and algebra. The number of options per question in this part was four.
Verbal Ability
The difficulty level of this section was easy to moderate. According to the experts, the passages were short and had direct questions. Sentence completion questions were of moderate level of difficulty. Statement conclusion and statement assumption questions were tricky. The fill in the blank questions on prepositions were easy. The number of options for the questions in this section was four.
Psychometric test
The section of Part 2 of the exam paper was compulsory to attempt. This part had three questions which tested the psychometric skills of the candidates. “The first set of questions had 30 statements out of which one had to pick 10 describing one’s personality traits without ranking them. The second set of questions included asked one to choose from a set of two arguments and also had to rate them from one to six based on their agreement with the arguments. In the third set of questions, one had to rank the various responses under given situations on a scale of one to six,” experts elucidated.
Creative Ability
This section of Part 3 of the exam paper had three questions testing the creative and communication abilities of the candidates. The questions were based on essay writing, story writing and formation of words. The topic of the essay was: ‘Tax Deduction to Women as they take care of educational and health needs of the family.’
For the question on story writing, a picture was given and a story had to be written based on it.
