The latest MBAUniverse.com Poll has revealed that the majority of the members of India’s management education community feel that the Essay Writing should completely replace the GD round for admissions to the MBA schools, such as IIMs.

To the question: Just as in US B-schools, and now some of the IIMs, should Essay Writing completely replace the GD round for admissions? 52% of the respondents have said ‘Yes’ whereas 40% have said ‘No’ and 8% are not able to judge what is best. There were a total of 80 respondents to the poll which was conducted from 8 to 13 March 2010.

The latest trend in Indian B-schools shows that the selection committee are more inclined towards essay writing and obviously it is a pointer to the changing criteria for admissions. IIM Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad are not holding the GD rounds. IIM Bangalore has replaced its GD with Essay Writing. IIM Lucknow will be holding a Essay Writing Test in addition to GD and PI.

There is more and more emphasis on the written communication part. Probably the GD round does not give equal opportunity to all the participants to speak their mind. This latest trend towards essay writing is also a pointer towards the demand in the corporate sector for people who can write well and get the big deals, rather just who can just speak sweetly.
