The MBAUniverse.com Poll conducted from 15 to 20 March 2010 has revealed that the majority of the members of India’s management education community are in favour of foreign universities setting up their campuses in India.
To the question: The Foreign University Bill has received Cabinet nod. Do you think the presence of foreign B-schools like Harvard, Kelloggs will be good for the Indian management education sector? A very high 84% of the respondents are optimistic on the entry of foreign universities. 13% feel that it will not be a good move.
The Government of India has recently approved a Bill to allow foreign education providers to set up campuses in India and offer degrees. The Foreign Educational Institution (Regulation of Entry and Operation) Bill, 2010, has been cleared by the Union Cabinet presided by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. This has paved the way for the Bill’s introduction in Parliament.
With the new law the government will be opening up the Indian education market for aggressive competition. The government believes that this will not only curb the flow of Indian students going abroad for higher education but also set up a competitive market for Indian institutes besides providing a substantial increase in seats for higher education.
