While we still have a majority of male candidates (67%), the percentage of female candidates has marginally increased by 1% compared to last year, which is a good sign”

Total registrations for the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2016 to Indian Institutes of Management and other leading B-schools have gone up to 2,32,434 applications received by the Office of the Convenor of CAT 2016 at the close of process at 5PM on September 27, 2016, the registration deadline. Last year this number was 2,18,664.

Last year there were 31.6% women applicants for CAT. This ratio has increased to 33% in CAT 2016.

50% Women among increased 14000 applicants
There are 6% more applicants than last year who have applied to take CAT 2016 on December 4, 2016. This number accounts for 13770 more applicants than last year. Sharing the statistics, Prof Rajendra K Bandi, convener CAT 2016 has highlighted that the share of women candidates among the increased number of CAT 2016 applicants comes to around 50%.

According to Prof Bandi “If we look at the total increase in the applications compared to last year, which is close to 14,000, almost half of these additional applications have come from female candidates.  This is a positive sign.  That means, the increase of female candidates is more than the increase of male candidates.”

3% More women in PWD category
The number of PWD (Persons with Disability) applicants has increased from 901 to 938 in CAT 2016. The ratio of women candidates in this category has also increased by 3% from 14.76% last year to 17.48% in CAT 2016.

Sharing the information Prof Bandi says “In this category, the percentage of male candidates is very high (more than 80%), which is something to think about. Our social systems need to encourage female PWD students. However, on the positive side, the percentage of female PWD candidates has increased from 14.76% to 17.48%.  Small positive steps, but miles to go on this.”

7000 more women applicants in CAT 2016
There were 69176 women candidates accounting for 31.63% out of total 218664 applicants who had registered for CAT 2015. For CAT 2016 this number has gone up to 76000 accounting for 33% out of total 232434 candidates.

CAT 2016 registrations stood at 2.08 lakhs on September 22, and after the last date to apply for CAT 2016 was extended to September 27, it go a shot in the arm and move to record 7 years high since 2010 and closed at 232434 applicants.

The increasing ratio of girl candidates in CAT 2016 registration is significant as Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are trying hard to have greater academic and gender diversity in class rooms. Most of the changes brought about in CAT 2016 also aim to achieve this goal.

To avoid any hardship the girl candidates might face while going to take CAT 2016 at some test centre in remote area, the CAT Centre 2016 has chalked out the plan to make it possible to allot the Girl candidates test venues near their first preferred city area. This will also help in more girls taking the test and improving the gender diversity in IIM Class rooms.

Accordingly number of CAT 2016 test cities have been increased to 138 from earlier 136 and the testing venues have also been increased to more than 650.

CAT 2016 registration was supposed to be closed on September 22 but was extended by another 5 days. The move yielded 24000 more candidates registering for CAT 2016.

CAT 2016 will be a single day 2 session exam to be conducted on December 4, 2016.To accommodate more than 2.32 lakhs test takers in a single day more testing cities and more testing venues have been assigned.
