Dear sir, exactly how much I need to study each day to score well in CAT and to what extent communication skills are important to get in IIMs as I lack good communication skills? (Abhi , Delhi)

Communication skills are important at the GD/ interview stage. If you are weak in this, I suggest you go through my book, ‘An Introduction to CAT-Tips from an IIM Alumnus’ carefully. It can be purchased from: http://www.pearsoned.co.in/web/books/9788131733400_An-Introduction-to-the-CAT_Sidharth-Balakrishna.aspx or from leading retail shops. My book provides you clear tips on how to go about GDs and Interviews, what kind of questions/ topics you get, what your answer can be etc You should put in at least 3-4 hours now every day for CAT.( Answered by Mr.Sidharth Balakrishna, Author & IIM C Alumnus )

Dear sir, I want to know that I should pursue MBA in which specialization (Finance/Marketing/ HR / IT or something else), as I prefer to get placed in any of the software sector companies as I am BE from CS. Doing an MBA in which of the sector would be best profitable for me in terms of salary packages and my overall development? (Prashant , Bangalore)

: It will be profitable if you make it to a good, top-notch institute. Just getting a degree may not help; it must be from a good institute. Evaluate the quality of institute carefully; and more information on how to do this is given in my book. Dear sir, I am in my 3rd year of my B.Tech(Mechanical).I want to take CAT2010.Will there be any problem for me at the time of exam this year? Will there be a problem for admissions in IIMs’ if I take CAT 2011? (Abhijith , Guntur)

You should only take CAT if you are in your final year of Graduation-or as per the terms and conditions in the prospectus. Not adhering to these terms, could be a risk and may result in penalties. Please have a look at the prospectus for the terms and conditions-varies from institute to institute.( Answered by Mr.Sidharth Balakrishna, Autor & IIM C alumnus)

Hello Sir, I don't have a good academic record. My 10th score was-76%, 12th score was-53.5%, B.Tech score was-73.5 %.I had a couple of years gap in my academic after 12th board. I was preparing for IIT, but was unable to it. So, I joined a state level engineering college. I want to ask you that whether my academic performances and the year gap will prove a hindrance in getting calls from institutes like IIMs’,XLRI,XIMB,FMS etc. Please guide me. (Darshan , Orissa)

Your previous academic record is one of the criteria that some (not all) MBA colleges look at, but it is not the only criteria. Your performance in the written exam, GD/ Interviews etc also will play a role. So you should definitely try!( Answered by Mr.Sidharth Balakrishna,Author & IIM C Alumnus)

Dear sir, I completed my B.E. in 2009. I worked in a company for 5 months and then joined my family business. I will be giving various MBA entrance exams this year. I want to know what will be my total work-ex and will I come under self-employed category? (Atul , Gaya)
View answer
You will have to look at the prospectus of the various institutes that you apply to. Mostly, the IIMs ask for ‘fully-paid work experience after Graduation’. A proper certificate proving work experience will be needed. (Answered by Mr. Sidharth Balakrishna, Author & IIM C Alumnus)
