  • I am a B.Sc final year (final Exam to be held in Feb 2012) student want to appear CAT this year, But my percentage in (1st+2nd) year is 46 %. Am I eligible for this year’s CAT? Kindly inform me as soon as possible?   (Kamlesh , agra)

    View answer

You are eligible to sit for CAT 2011 since you are in final year of your graduation. As far as your percentage in your graduation is concerned, you don’t have to feel bad for the same because still you have one year to go to get at least 50 % marks in your graduation and just believe in yourself and work hard, you will definitely drag your percentage from 46 to 50% easily. Thus don’t dishearten yourself! As far as eligibility is concerned, you can sit for CAT 2011 since you haven’t completed your graduation as yet. Marks will be checked later on and then they will take decision whether you are eligible for the B-school or not.

  • How many questions of quant will be there out of 30 questions from the first section?   (Manoj Kumar , Gurgaon)

    View answer

  • How do I prepare for the new pattern? What would be the difficulty level? How does it help us? How many questions to be answered correctly to get through the exam with more than 97 percentile ?   (B. Sri Ram , Coimbatore)

    View answer

You don’t have to prepare extra questions or other than syllabus questions for this new pattern of CAT. The syllabus is same as that of the previous years’ papers, only the pattern has changed. There would be two sections instead of three as it was till the year 2010. Time period would be 70 minutes for each section. Each section will comprise quant and DI in one and verbal ability and LR in another as you must have known by now. Preparation processes would remain the same - it is only your strategy that comes into the picture, yes DI and LR gains extremely high importance because a good attempt at each of these areas would take you a long way in each section. Difficulty level would be from moderate to difficult as per the last few years’ analysis. But yes you should be ready to take on any type of questions which you will asked because CAT is known for throwing unpredictable questions, thus preparation of yours should be such that you can understand the approach or application of the question as soon as you see the same on your computer screen. CAT can ask you anything and everything within syllabus. Thus, prepare yourself with that expertise only. The new pattern represents in a much fairer way of assessing students - due to the fact that everybody is going to be solving each section for the same amount of time. Also a fairer chance for the non mathematical minds to crack this exam as verbal ability and LR in one section altogether. You should not go to the examination hall with this mindset that I will do only these number of questions. Put your best efforts and just do whatever you know very confidently. If I say today that you have to do 25 questions each of the two sections out of 30, then will you not attempt the 26th question if time permits you? Thus very essential to put your best efforts. But yes, for getting 97+ percentile, one should attempt at least 25 questions out of 30 questions in each of the two sections in CAT as per the new pattern, and accuracy level should be at least 22-23 questions out of those 25 questions attempted.

  • I have a problem that I stammer a lot. Currently I passed my B.Tech and have an excellent academic background..If I get a good percentile, then will my stammering affect my chances of getting into IIMs?   (Ricky , Jamshedpur)

    View answer

You don’t have to worry a lot regarding this as you can start with the practice of speaking aloud, be confident whatever you are saying. And if all these doesn’t help much, you can join a speech therapy where may be you can be a better speaker. Then the chances are that you will secure good points in GD/PI and the key point is that always speak confidently. Whatever you are speaking, if you are clear with your thoughts, then it will not matter much. All the best!

  • I am final year student of B.Sc. Mathematics (Honors) 2011.When I will be filling CAT form, do I have to attach mark sheets of first and second year with that form?   (Abhishek , New Delhi)

  • How many days is it required for the preparation for CAT. I have hardly started for it. Is it possible to crack if I start seriously now?   (Vinu , Chennai)

    View answer

This is really high time that you should start preparing for the same as CAT entrance exam is almost round the corner. Serious CAT preparation requires 8 months to 1 year preparation time. And thus of course these few days are very less for CAT preparation. Though as the saying goes, never say never and be optimistic in life, thus you can start your preparation now also but yes very seriously so that you can sail through the entire admission process without any hindrance.

  • I just want to know that I have got 48% in B.Com. Am I eligible for giving the CAT exam?   (Preet Gupta , Delhi)

    View answer

See the thing is if you have got 48% in B.Com till the final year, then you are not eligible to write CAT. You will be eligible to sit for the examination provided you belong to SC/ST/OBC Category because the minimum percentage required for them is 45%. You are also eligible for giving MAT and XAT exams. So try for them also.
