There are very many management institutes in India. Some estimates put the number at over 1,500. Which is why it is all the more important that you make the right choice from within the crowd.
Management institutions can be classified into following types:
Government Aided: Six Indian Institutes of Management, Management departments of various IITs and NITIE, Mumbai
University System: Many universities offer an MBA degree. Some of the better ones are FMS Delhi, JBIMS (Mumbai University), BHU and University Business School, Chandigarh.
Private Institutions: Majority of B-schools fall in this category. The leading institutes are MDI, XLRI and IMT. Some are promoted by corporates -- like BIMTECH and NIRMA Institute of Management.
Other than IIM Ahmedabad, the other top ten institutes according to Business Today's 2006 survey of business schools are IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SBIM) Pune, IIM Lucknow, Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) Jamshedpur, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS), Mumbai, IIM Indore, Faculty of Management Studies Delhi and Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) Delhi.
There are other institutes like SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) Mumbai, MDI Gurgaon, IMT Ghaziabad, BIMTECH Greater Noida etc, which are also well-regarded.
