MBA from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is one of the best management programmes at par with many IIMs and other top MBA colleges in India. IITs are the institutes of national importance. Apart from their graduate engineering programmes, IITs are now known for the best quality MBA programmes offered by them. Pursuing MBA from one of the IITs not only offers you an IIT brand but the programme is also enriched with good learning experience followed by good campus placement packages as are secured by top B-schools in India.

There are 23 IITs in India and out of them 7 offer 2 years full time MBA programmes with various specializations. IIT MBA admission process is based on CAT exam score. Three IITs namely IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur conduct their individual admission process. For MBA admission in other four IITs – namely IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Dhanbad, IIT Roorkee, there is IIT MBA Common Admission Process known as IIT MBA CAP. A candidate who is included in the merit list of IIT MBA CAP round, is offered MBA admission by one or more of these four IITs as per their individual admission criteria.

IIT MBA admission 2020 is also impacted by Corona Virus pandemic. Instead of conducting Common Admission Process with WAT & PI round, the final selection process of IIT MBA Admission 2020 is based on the merit list prepared as per the individual shortlisting criteria of each IIT.

What is IIT MBA CAP?
IIT MBA Common Admission process or IIT MBA CAP is the final selection round for MBA admission in four IITs. IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad participate in the Common Admission Process which is conducted in the month of March/April every year. There is no need to separately appear in PI-WAT for each of the participating IITs as the scores of IIT MBA CAP are applicable for all the participating IITs.

The key components of IIT MBA CAP are Writing Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI). On the basis of performance in the CAP round, a common merit list is prepared and shared with each participating IIT. On the basis of their final admission weightages and criteria, each of the four IITs make admission offer separately to the selected candidates. IIT MBA CAP is a single point selection process and is common PI-WAT round for all the participating IITs. It is conducted in 5 cities namely Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Roorkee. Applicants need to give three preferences

IIT MBA CAP: Key Points on Admission Process for IIT Delhi, Madras, Dhanbad, Roorkee

  • One Common Application Form: There is a common application portal to apply for DMS - IIT Delhi, DMS - IIT(ISM) Dhanbad , DoMS - IIT Madras and/or DoMS IIT Roorkee. If a candidate wishes to apply to all the four institutes, only one application needs to be submitted.
  • Separate Shortlisting by Individual IIT: Only those who are shortlisted by the respective IIT are invited to the interview process (the Written Ability Test and Personal Interview). Shortlist for interview process for all the four IITs is announced in the common portal and copies of necessary certificates need to be uploaded.
  • CAP Round & Location: There is only one common interview process for those who are shortlisted by one or more than one IIT. Common Interview process is conducted in 5 cities: Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Roorkee. Applicants need to give three preferences. The Institutes retain the final right to hold or not to hold the interview process in any given location. The candidates must be prepared to be interviewed in any location notwithstanding the city preferences given by them.
  • Final Admission Offer: Final selection list for MBA admission is announced by the respective IIT after receiving the MBA CAP round score. The admission offer is based on individual IIT MBA admission criteria and weightage awarded to various components.

IIT MBA Admission 2020: Important Change - No CAP Round
IIT MBA admission process for 2020 has done away with the IIT MBA CAP round for the four IITs. Other IITs who are conducting their individual Selection process for MBA Admissions 2020 have scrapped their further WAT process and are conducting the personal interviews online only.

The IIT MBA Common Admissions Committee 2020 considered the prevailing situation due to corona virus in the country and has taken due cognizance of the directives/advice received from the Ministry. There is no IIT MBA Common Admission Process 2020 for the candidates. Instead the final selection will be done as per following individual IIT MBA Admission Procedure

  • WAT/PI scores will not be taken into account for the MBA admissions this year by the participating IITs under Common Admission Process .
  • WAT/PI selection process for the candidates who were scheduled to be interviewed at Roorkee, Mumbai and Kolkata has been cancelled.
  • The selection processes which were conducted at New Delhi and Chennai have been annulled.
  • For the IIT MBA admission 2020, the participating IITs under Common Admission Process namely IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, IIT Dhanbad will make their selection list independently as per their individual shortlisting criteria for the MBA admissions.
  • CAT score, academic performance, experience and other inputs compiled from the candidates' applications will be used for preparing the final selection list (without WAT/PI scores). This shortlist will be treated as the final selection list by the individual IITs
  • The final selection lists for MBA admissions will be declared by the respective IITs individually. The details of the same will be announced on May 29, 2020.

IIT MBA Admission Procedure: Non-CAP IITs - IIT Bombay, Kanpur, Kharagpur
IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur do not participate in IIT MBA common admission process and conduct their own admission process. The IIT MBA selection process for these 3 IITs include WAT & PI round. However the IIT MBA Admission process 2020 has been changed by these institutes and they are not conducting the Writing Ability Test and have switched to online mode of interview process due to corona virus pandemic. From next year it is expected that each of these IITs will follow its established process for MBA Admission 2021 as shared below:
